13. FAQs Is it possible to start off by studying Korean for a year, and then decide to go for the 4- year program, or is it a 5 year commitment from the start? ⇒ Students are required to make a commitment for 5 years, however there is no guarantee of admission to SMU after completion of the Korean language course. To enter SMU, a student must achieve TOPIK (Test Of Proficiency In Korean) level 3 and fulfill all other entrance requirements. If a scholarship student has failed to gain the admission to the SMU undergraduate course before finishing the Korean language course, the funding of scholarship will be suspended.

What about credits I earn in Korea? Can they be transferred to US colleges? How do I find out? ⇒ It depends on the university you are applying for. The standard for transferable credits differs by university. However, upon graduation from Sun Moon University, application for graduate school in the US is possible without exception.

How many months a year do I need to be in Korea? Is there an expectation that I remain in Korea during vacation time? ⇒ During your study period at Korean Language Institute, you are obligated to stay in Korea even during vacations except on special occasions. But after you enter the undergraduate course, you are free to leave Korea during vacation. In general, summer vacation is from late June until late August and winter vacation is from middle December until late February.

I understand that there is a scholarship for tuition. But are there other, out of pocket fees or expenses that I should know about? ⇒ Yes, all expenses not explicitly covered in the scholarship agreement are the responsibility of the individual student. Please see section “8” for details.

What happens to the international students when school is not in session? Where do they sleep? Eat? ⇒ Those who want to stay on campus during vacations are permitted to stay in the dormitory as long as they apply in advance (during session). The dormitory cafeteria will be in operation during vacation. Meal plans are not included in the dorm fee, but can be purchased separately.

What is the situation with medical coverage and medical insurance? Can I use the school’s health center? What happens if I have a major incident while abroad? ⇒ International students’ insurance will only cover accidents that occurred in Korea. Please refer to the below chart for more details.

❍ Cases not covered under this insurance *Intentional accident * Treatment for facial improvement purposes *Treatment related to pregnancy & childbirth *Normal fatigue & tiredness *Certain types of rectum or proctologic disorder *Certain types of dental & herbal remedy *Expenses billed by a medical institute located outside Korea *Pre-existing conditions * Dental work : We highly advise all dental care to be done prior to arrival in Korea.

What if two or more members of the same family wish to apply? ⇒ If they are selected as grantees, they may receive the same benefits of the scholarship fund.

Can students who graduated from online/home schooling at the high school level also apply to Sun Moon University? ⇒ Yes, starting from the 1st semester of 2016, Sun Moon University will be accepting the said students (however, all applicants must be accepted by the SMU administrative office prior to).

While the Global Scholarship system consists of 1+4 (1 year course at KLI + 4 year under-graduate course), can students who already graduated 3 years of college level courses, transfer to SMU as a junior after finishing KLI? ⇒ No, the system does not allow transferring credits.

While the Global Scholarship system consists of 1+4 (1 year course at KLI + 4 year under-graduate course), if students satisfy the criterion for foreign student enrollment (level 3 or above on their TOPIK score), can they go on to the under-graduate course without taking the KLI course? ⇒ No, under this program, you will NOT be eligible for the under-graduate course unless you complete the 1 year KLI course.

Under the 1+4 system, if my course (under-graduate) requires 5 years instead of 4, would I still qualify for scholarship throughout the entire period? ⇒ Yes, if the under-graduate course requires 5 years, you will be eligible to receive scholarships throughout the entire period.

If I was not able to graduate my under-graduate course in 4 years due to double- majors, etc., would I still be eligible to receive scholarships after my 4th year?

⇒ No, the scholarship will not cover fees for extended periods of study due to the students’ personal reasons.

If I fail to keep my GPA required standard, will my scholarship be revoked? ⇒ Your scholarship will be suspended during the following semester. However, you may redeem your scholarship from the next semester if you successfully bring your GPA back above standard. Though your scholarship may have been frozen, as long as your identification as a scholarship student is intact, you must continue to abide by its standards.

How many credits do foreign under-graduate Global Scholarship students require? ⇒ For foreign under-graduate students, 70% of their scholarship is provided from the foundation (WMPA) and the rest from SMU. So, the students should follow regulations provided by both WMPA and SMU. Credits differ with the year of entry into SMU. In 2014, students were required to earn at least 12 credits during their freshmen year, 18 credits during both their sophomore and junior years, and 15 credits during their senior year. However, starting from 2016, students who have entered since 2015 are required to earn 12 credits or more their freshman year, 15 credits their sophomore and junior years respectively, and 12 credits their senior year. This standard is required for ‘Foreign Student Scholarships’ at SMU and is also upheld by WMPA.

Do GPA standards also differ depending on the year I enter? ⇒ Yes, they do. WMPA and SMU also have different GPA standards. According to WMPA, students are required to earn a 2.3 GPA or above regardless of the year they entered. However, SMU regulations require that students earn a 2.3 GPA or above during their freshman year, and a 2.5 GPA or above during the remainder of their under-graduate course. Therefore, students who entered SMU in 2015 and beyond, may only receive 70% of their scholarship money, if their GPA is higher than 2.3 but lower than 2.5.

When students participate in an overseas language program like the 3+1 system, the maximum credits they can earn is 15. If students, who entered in 2014, participate in the program, it is impossible to earn the required 18 credits. What should they do? ⇒ In this case, as long as it is approved by SMU, WMPA will also accept 15 credits as the standard for the scholarship.

If we renounce our status as a scholarship student, do we need to pay back our full tuition? ⇒ According to the pledge signed by all students upon receiving the scholarship, it states that, “If I choose to discontinue the scholarship program without any proper reason, I shall return the full amount of the scholarship money.” If students are unable to continue their scholarship program, they are recommended to fill out a “Wonmo Pyeongae Global Scholarship Student Scholarship Renouncement” form and submit it to WMPA through the SMU office. WMPA will review and notify them of the result.

I heard there is a ‘Wonmo Zone’ in the dormitory. Could you give me more information about it, and what I need to do to apply for dormitory? ⇒ The ‘Wonmo Zone’ refers to the rooms in the dormitory reserved for Global Scholarship students. Simply put, it is intended to help you develop your skills and abilities as a global leader by sharing rooms with students from other countries. Scholarship students are eligible to occupy the ‘Wonmo Zone’ during their under- graduate course. The process is as follows : [The Office of the Chaplain assigns roommates] → [The Office of International Affairs submits the list to the Dormitory] → [The Dormitory front office registers the list into its database] → [The Dormitory front office announces its results] Note, aside from the process shown above, students must also apply individually with the dormitory through its online website.

I heard class attendance during KLI will be evaluated. What happens if I fall short? ⇒ Evaluation of attendance is done by semester. These are the Spring+Summer and Autumn+Winter semesters, while the Spring+Summer semester consists of a total of 440 hours. Therefore, if students miss more than 44 hours of classes, it would be subjected to evaluation.

Since the foundation only covers 70% of the undergraduate scholarship for foreign students and Sunmoon University covers the other 30%, students with Korean dual nationality may not be eligible to receive 30% of the scholarship. Is there any way to receive full scholarship? ⇒ Students who have Korean dual nationality may not receive the 30% portion of the scholarship offered by Sunmoon University in accordance with the regulation of the foreign student scholarship. From 2017, those students may be eligible to receive full scholarship from the foundation, if their parent is employed by FFWPU. Please submit an evidential document registered officially by the respective regional headquarters.
