[Leaders’ meeting during lunch. Beginning missing.]
…case of Japanese brothers, unable to help them, we have to figure out, when the rainy days come … you have to call the full members … If … enough, can go home by themselves, but if these people should be assigned to fund-raising, … how to organize. How many…
Father feels that if your troops are able to work by themselves, fine, then the New York Church members, if you don’t need them and if it does not fit, we have to turn these people into a fund- raising team. You have to organize.
[American and Japanese leaders, including Mr. Kamiyama and Pres. Neil Salonen discuss with Father]
The problem is, can you fulfill your job without Japanese brothers and sisters? You are in trouble now…
[American leaders keep discussing].
Father instructed Col. [Bo Hi] Pak, who is on the way to Korea, to give the message to Mr. [Duk Moon] Aum, the heavenly architect; he will come to do this work, I don’t know the connection with this. He is called to come to repair, some blueprint, I don’t know, but you have to hurry up.
American leader: This is important for Father to see now. This is the Belvedere plan. This is the driveway coming in, offices, training center, and the big, round place where you speak. Then the new addition would be this. The stables are gone. This is a deck to overlook the Hudson River. So, people can sit up there to study, or just talk. Looking at it, from right here, this is the back of the building, The lecture room is right underneath, at ground level. So you walk over the top and
go downstairs, down the back here, underneath. Then this is the dormitory, bathroom, bathroom, dormitory. This is the lab. This is to put a total of 150 people.
Father: Only this part?
Leader: Thirty over here and twenty still over on this end, on this floor; 150 total; we designed it for 120… This is it; we do this professional building, and we have to hire outside people to do it. It is $500,000. If we had capable people, we might get it down to $ 275,000 or 300,000. The only problem right now is that we don’t have enough qualified members.
Father: Hire! You already spent a lot of money?
Leader: No, we only spent $ 60,000 to remodel this entire area here, the bathrooms. Our original plan…
Father, in English: …More big one,… about 300 members. …
[Korean, Japanese and American leaders continue to discuss with Father].
Father: Make a model. That size is fine. … Mr. Aum will make the final check. Father is concerned that this will be something that can be shown to the architectural world. … Better wait until Mr. Aum comes. Mr. Aum has another business dealing with hotels in Korea. …
[Discussion on the new building continues.]
Neil Salonen: Can I get your opinion on some literature? We have several ideas for the Day of Hope Festival posters. Temporarily, we use this one, but we need some good literature.
Father: Instead of red, better black and white.
Neil Salonen: One question is about how to show Father’s image. Should it be similar to the ‘Celebration of Life’?
David Kim: We no longer use [Sun Myung Moon] Christian Crusade.
[Discussing the title of the new crusade and the lay-out of the literature, the choice of Father’s picture, the colors, the tickets.]
David Kim: So we have to be aware that we will have a lawsuit. We are going to discuss about the Unification Theological Seminary.
Father: Before dealing with topic of the geographical situation, or rooms, or any other matters, the question of recruits for the theological seminary is most urgent. Where do we get the students, how? We have to recruit the seminarians. The priority should be given to those European brothers and sisters who are still working in this country, in Los Angeles, on the IOWC, and even the New York Church members. Those who are college graduates, those who are able to speak English, these people should have the priority to be educated at the Seminary.
Mr. Kamiyama will investigate how many German brothers and sisters there are, also how many families from overseas, not Americans.
Neil Salonen: We already have a computer list.
Father: Make a recommendation of the best ones. Those who speak English, have been a long time in the family and have abilities. Those who work hard and still remain in this country. There is room for about 20 people from overseas. Ten Japanese brothers and sisters, college graduates, and one German and other European brothers and sisters, ten and ten.
Sixty members, even …
Michael Warder: 40 is enough; I have a program of 40.
David Kim: with 5 professors?
Michael Warder: Yes.
David Kim: 60 is too many?
Michael Warder: We don’t need it, for fulfilling anybody’s standards, we don’t need it.
David Kim: How about if Father says 50. Is that all right?
Michael Warder: Sure.
Father: Then, thirty American college graduates who have an excellent standard and are long time college graduates. You have to recommend them.
[The above is explained in Japanese to Mr. Kamiyama.]
Father feels that some might drop out. So, let us recruit fifty. Father plans to bring some Korean old-timers after we have the state approval. So for next year we might invite them … in February. But at the moment we will have twenty Japanese and European brothers, thirty from America; all together, fifty. Suppose there will come ten from Korea next spring, then we will have a total of about 60. That kind of a figure.
Neil Salonen: Do we want to invite any from Europe?
Father: We don’t need it now. But in case we are short of people for the twenty, we can ask for some from London or from European countries. But at the moment those who are here will be given the priority.
Next spring, Father plans to have 120 people. So, we will have to have more professors, at least ten or twelve. Expand, even up to 250 students. Multiplication. We never stay in one corner. Barrytown will…
When the Seminary is really on the right track (?) to the academic circle as the sun rising from the East, we cannot continue both functions of Training Center and Seminary on an academic level. So, Father plans to buy a new institutional building between here and … Soon we will purchase it, so, sooner or later the training and the theological seminary, the academic field, should be separated. That means we need money to purchase a new training center and for other expenses. So, Father already instructed that hundred people be recruited from Oakland and Los Angeles, I don’t know how many are here at the moment, there is no report yet.
Neil Salonen: Should we bring one hundred from Yeon-Soo now?
Father: 30 people every month, beginning next month, September.
Also, this fund-raising team will help with preparations for the Yankee Stadium crusade. The problem is up to the chief evangelist, Neil Salonen, through his IOWC work, Christian Crusade or whatever, how much you are accomplishing toward the goal of doubling membership. Even though he is responsible for the New York Church, he is the key, the mainstream of the fighting forces. So, you have to bring more multiplication. The ten New York Church centers should do their own business while you multiply through your own endeavor, not depending too much on the churches, not being indebted to them. IOWC should be reinforced.
Neil Salonen: financially self-sufficient?
[Father, in Japanese to Mr Kamiyama; both discuss.]
Please collect all these applicants. Why don’t you return them to me, and I will wrap it up for Father and he will pick the best ones.
In September, Father plans to visit Europe, when he will select the candidates, after September, select the candidates for next year’s students. Michael’s job is to push by all means, even using
bribery, I don’t know, quickly … So, you better go after them all the time, not staying in one place, but going after each man. Actually, we will be better off if we begin the Seminary after getting the approval, of course, but … we are qualified ourselves to be … we have qualified professors…
… we better find out… home visit, sometimes, if necessary, the guys, the opponents, where the trouble is, even using the money. Same public relations approach, speed up a little bit. If you need some more money, ask the finance minister, Mr. Kamiyama, and get the money. Mainly, money should speed up the approach.
[Father in Japanese] If we get the approval in September, even he can bring some students from Korea and from Europe. 120 students will be wonderful. Also, at the same time we have to look for other professors, too. If four professors work together, including Miss Kim, we can even invite part-time professors to come here, to fill some special curriculum, until they are hired permanently. That kind of a method. Through our professors, we can hire temporary instructors. In any institute, they have instructors, associate professors, assistant professors…
Not only religious education and theology; you have to expand, even philosophy, social sciences, marriage and sociology of the family, that kind of thing that all seminaries are doing. Practical disciplines. Not only the philosophical and theological area, but other disciplines, too. It is related. Even social welfare, counseling, chaplaincy, the Seminary can expand into all these areas. So, it is possible. Then, we have to increase the departments, of course… So, he [Father] wants to make … it the best seminary throughout the United States. He will hire even twenty professors. So, everything big, today he talked about. A big seminary. He wants to set up a famous, controversial and highest quality seminaries.
Then, after the installation of those professors, we will invite all world-renowned professors, such as Nobel Prize winners in theology, philosophy, from England, Europe, France, Germany - invite them to come over here and have a seminar, a summer session. When such famous people come from throughout the world, the Unification Theological Seminary director will become famous.
Then, these people will have a connection, a sisterhood relationship with their schools, and we will have a revival here, and will have international seminars, just like the Science Conference. Then, IOWC members will be mobilized in Europe, where they have a world-renowned international seminar, a big science conference. Will you do that? Some kind of a conference in which all this proclamation of the new idea, new theology takes place. Sometimes we will have a big conference, centering on the revival through the theological, philosophical or religious camp. This is my future vision.
This revival team will go throughout the world. Scholars, Catholics and Protestants, and even Jews, all religions, will go to Japan and meet in a conference, that will become world famous. Then even these people at the science conference will be writing their theses, publishing books about the new philosophy, the new theology, new education; this whole area will be brought into the public view. They will write books on the new direction of human history. That is the purpose. That is the only purpose. We are not staying at 50 people.
If any force or group of professors or academics cannot deny what we have been doing, then we will be the sole masters of the academic and philosophical world. We are trying to join the interfaith world council [World Council of Churches?]. This is the real meaning of the unification of religions, not only denominations, but a world council of all religions. If we provide the financial support, they will do their job working with guidance from us. That is the reason we established the Unification Theological Seminary. Eventually all renowned scholars must have graduated from this Seminary. We have people, we have a place and we have money.
We are not going to make a small theological seminary, but a big one that attains fame throughout the world. You might go there as a young man, but still go there to meet eminent figures and share this vision. Don’t be threatening. Do you know what Reverend Moon has? A half a million will be spent to bring 60 Nobel Prize winners. Think big. Give them an idea of what you are doing, then ask them to please help us.
Fortunately Reverend Moon came to this country and made this big and famous Seminary. If he
were to go to Korea and Japan, what would happen? So, you have to appreciate what he is doing. The American public should welcome it and even help to give approval as a school. So, you petition them and give them all kinds of solid information. In America, the Christian nation, the churches are declining. We are going to find a way to revive this nation. Reverend Moon is doing that. National appreciation should go to Reverend Moon. You have to directly help him.
What is the main reason for the success of the American Founding Fathers? They absorbed everything with open minds. They received everything. That is why in 400 years the nation became big. So, you have to see beyond the city, even the state, the nation and the whole world. The reason they oppose is that they are afraid and they don’t understand us. They don’t know our original motivation. This leads to opposition. Look at the fruit. See what he is doing. Look at the young people, including me. I used to be a hippie and now I am a gentleman. So, you ask him to evaluate all this. Tell them that Reverend Moon is bringing a revival to this nation and so they have to help him. Look at the whole situation.
Tell them that America has to make friendly relationships throughout the world. Korean professors come here and are making a good relationship with America. America should make a good relationship with other nations. That is the only way to win and survive. All immigrants misunderstand America and give us a hard time, but Reverend Moon is not the person to give a burden to the nation. He is bringing out a new way, adding something to this nation’s prosperity, for the future welfare of this nation.
If at times they don’t understand you, you have to really pretend to be upset and persuade them. You have to persistently approach them. We are law-abiding people. We are not going against the law. Why don’t you be fair and deal with us according to the law? We have qualified ourselves. So, if you could get the approval before September, Father will be glad to invite some students from Korea. Father even instructed them already and told them who should come. But they cannot come right now, because we have no student visas.
Also, Japanese candidates have been chosen already. So, keep in mind, twenty from overseas, thirty from America. We have to keep it up. You will pick them and bring them to me. I will handle it.
Michael Warder: The Regents don’t meet until September.
True Father: Father even asks you people to follow them wherever they are, even on vacation. Go there and express that it is an urgent matter. Just like the council of churches, we get the vote… every day our public relations team goes there. You don’t like us, but we are not going to harm you. In the same way, go there persistently. Even as late as the first of September. We are planning to open the school on the 21st, isn’t that right?
Michael Warder: The 22nd is the opening day, but the ceremony is on the 19th.
True Father: Why the 19th? The 21st will be a better day.
Neil Salonen: The 21st is a Sunday. Monday is what? The 22nd. Saturday is the 20th.
True Father: The number nine is bad, so you better take the 19th. If we get the approval from the state, I am ready to bring the Korean candidates. Instead of 40 people to begin with, 120 would be good. It is just because of the lack of permission that we are waiting.
Neil Salonen: We should bring up another point. The immigration attorney said that he can get visas now for people who come to Barrytown, if we promise they will stay here, in other words, that they will not fundraise or witness. If they come only to Barrytown, and not engage in street- witnessing in New York.
True Father: Can he put that in writing?
Neil Salonen: He said he certainly could.
True Father: Father feels it is too much of a problem. We should get the approval first and then we can bring them over. If we have a permit, we… Is there any way to let them have a written
paper? Is it okay that we open on the 19th of September? We will do the opening, but…
Michael Warder: Mr. Kim, the important point is whether our courses are accepted by other universities. You don’t have to have state approval, but if our courses are accepted in other universities, that would be another way that we could qualify with the State Education Department. In other words, if our courses could be transferred as credits in other schools.
David Kim: We never even opened.
True Father: You’d better speed up your rate of making contacts. If they come to investigate, everything should be ready for them. That is why you have got to have nice chairs, nice rooms, a library, everything ready for their inspection.
Michael Warder: One man came here from Albany already. Dr. Carr [?], he came here about two months ago. He thought we were okay, but he has to convince some other people. I’ll work with him.
True Father: The application form, everybody in America is filling it out, right?
David Kim: Yes, they have to fill it out, and Father will see the picture of those who have a college degree and he will pick them up, right there. I’ll explain who are the best ones. Preferably, one third will be women and two thirds will be men. You have a computerized recommendation list. You give a chart, these people’s age, how many years, what college, what specialization, etc. Let me have the sheet with the application, then Father will look at it. Father prefers to have those who work hard, those who contributed in this work, proven good workers.
Neil Salonen: What about the Global Team and the New Hope Singers in Japan? There are about a hundred Americans over there; a number of them have college degrees. So far we did not include them, but should we?
True Father: They are fine for the next time. But now work with those who are staying here in America. Father will pick up those who are key workers on the front-line and those who are important staff members in some organization. He will pick up the mid-level people who have potential for the future. So, it is not necessary to send the applications to me and to Father. He will pick them up from there, with these conditions. If we pick the good ones on the frontline, who are state and center directors or others like that, we will have a great hindrance. We want somebody with a college degree who has an important role now, without whom the functioning will deteriorate. We have to consider. So, when you pick up on those considerations, where they are, that kind of thing, we easily can let Father see the picture.
During the summer vacations, the seminarians will work. That is why we will have a Dean of Students. The internal staff operation is very important. They should have a large number of extra-curricular activities in addition to the academic training in order to develop their spirituality. The academic training will be given by the four or five professors. Some of them are training, just as Mr. [Ken] Sudo is doing. We have to continue that kind of fellowship, living in the faith and practice the life of faith. In other words, our family life and the academic life should come together.
Actually, principally speaking, those who have worked hard so long have to come here to be trained. That is why I am giving a chance to those people from overseas. We are not ready to accept all these people, those who worked hard for so many long years. By the time (they finish the?) three seven year course, this Seminary will be able to easily accommodate all those who worked hard in the past, to come here to be trained in the academic field. At that time, a Ph.D. degree will be offered; even before that, not only a Master’s Degree, but also doctorate degrees will be offered by that time. Unification scholars will be produced.
So far, the basic idea is to establish this Unification Theological Seminary. Father is both the founder and the master. He is the boss, running all things, even though David Kim is the acting president. Father is the boss. Because he has no time, sometimes, so Mr. David Kim is acting as president. So, you have to clearly understand… You might think why do you have an acting president instead of president. You might be curious about this.
The reason is that one place is being used by two institutions. We have to make a clear demarcation between the training center and the Seminary. Otherwise, more misunderstandings and confusion will arise continuously. Now, at the moment we have forty people, so you have to work together, you have to learn how to work together with the lower echelon under Father, David Kim with Mr. [Joe] Tully, Mr. [Hiroshi] Matsuzaki and Mr. Sudo.
We have to give a very nice treatment to the professors. To do so, we will have to spend money, of course. They are the shining light for Father’s work, Father’s agents to the whole world. Even he might think of buying each of them a residence. If they work together with us, they will gain a good image. Each of them will be well known. The unmarried ones can stay as a bachelor, and that is fine, or I can match them. I am planning to treat these professors very nicely. He [?] is a very good trumpet, perfect sound, for the… If we buy twelve houses in this local area, we can create a professors’ community there, and the local people will be positively impressed because it will help their village. This is looking into the future, of course.
At the moment, no other choice, we have to worship [?] together and … Father will provide vans … passengers can arrive in micro-buses or whatever, give them [?] wherever they like to go… drive them to New York, sometimes we give them taxis, shuttles, vans… They will be very glad. Their job is to do something for our movement. Father will pay them substantial salaries, $ 2,500 or even $3,000 a month, so these people should do something. This place will become famous, so all scholars will be longing to know about Barrytown. They will want to know where it is; they will be talking about it… I am even ready to pay them for teaching only three months and allowing them the rest of the time to pursue their own activities, but we give them the salary. One yearly salary will be given out just to come here, even for only three months. The other nine months, you can go on vacation; I don’t care. Father has that kind of an idea for these professors.
So, we use the professors, Dr. such and such. We give them money monthly, we say he is on research … he has to learn many things from the world. So, Father will take them out, give them a ticket to go to London and speak out on Unification Theology and Movement, Rev. Moon. Some of the guys are teaching about the life of the founders of all religions. I think he, Dr. Lewis, will include Rev. Moon’s life, too. Definitely, he will say good things. So, let them do something. Three months you teach, and another nine months you go throughout the world and blow the trumpet. Father will … he will take them. To let them … on him. All professors in the whole world [will know this?], he is giving money, a house, only three months’ work and nine months’ vacation, taxi, sometimes… everyone will want to come here.
Then we assign this professor, you go to another country, and you make a conference. We give the money and he will do it. He is able to. We don’t have to … just like he does in the Science Conference. They like to have it. … one of these professors wants to write a book of 500 pages about Rev. Sun Myung Moon, his thought and his teaching. He already got … ideas already, 500 pages. In the future, if any student will write on the Unification Movement… One of the guys who has a PhD of the University of California… So if anybody writes something [on] Rev. Sun Myung Moon, doctorate degrees are ready. Very interesting.
All renowned scholars will pass through the Barrytown Theological Seminary. Same with all these Nobel Prize winners. To be become more famous, they will have to go to the Sun Myung Moon University. 550 acres around… Think, besides this.. will be the president of the Sun Myung Moon university … besides that lawn there, and helicopter and private jet plane, Jumbo plane besides the Hudson river, think of it. That is to being realized … very soon, in a few years. Think big, think wide, have guts.
This is not just talking. We are convinced. From now on, lots of rumors will spread, if even though Father gave instructions like this, in these two institutions, the Training Center and the Unification Theological Seminary, the staff is not working in harmony. You must not spread that kind of a rumor. You have to work together in unison, in harmony, understand each other. Do not cause trouble to our Father. This is a direction. If anything … no need to bring out these things to above. The heads, or chiefs, of staff working together in understanding, you don’t have to bring this kind of rumor or this kind of problem above. Lots of things we have to do. Horizontally, we have to work hard. Do you understand, OK?
Father feels there will be no problem working together. We have the same goal; sometimes, we are going through a different door, but we have the same destination, the same goal. So, Father feels that the problem is, how soon we will get the approval. That is it, that is the main thing. Working together, harmonious teamwork, can be done very easily. Without approval, it is strange if 120 people come from overseas. It will just hurt Father’s image. So, he is slowing it down to have 50 this time. So, do it.
Concerning the external and internal issues, he clearly gave directions to you. For the training Center and the seminary, the staff… the future direction is clear. Why not, Matsusaki and Joe Tully, who are graduates, if you… the Seminary does not take so much time, only, sometimes for a week, ten hours. Enroll, you will get a master’s degree very soon, so including you, even working here, you join and get the degree. If you are busy, few [?] credits, even one quarter [term], three months, work on it, then you work hard, then Father will give you free… You accumulate credits … ninety. Then you get a master’s degree. If you take one quarter every time, after four years you have a master’s degree. Very … So, you have a master’s degree. Father picked them up [?] when the application comes to you. Everybody, as was said, in Belvedere here… college graduate should write it up and give it to me. So, he encourages you both. He [Michael Warder] cannot do that, because he is busy, the Science Conference. You will be the seniors, and later you will teach. All professors will go out and you will take over.
Sometimes, Father will give the privilege to college graduates in local areas, center director or state [leaders], IOWC team members, to come here three months. Then, every year they can do this. Six quarters and they graduate. Very easy. Even doctorate degrees in theology, doctorate degrees in philosophy, we have to expand very soon.
[Father speaks a long time in Japanese. Mr. Sudo answers.]
You have to concentrate your thoughts on completing the repairs of the Headquarters. Unless HQ is repaired, you just cannot show you national HQ prestige to the whole world. In other words, Father thinks, repair first, then people occupy the rooms. Before the repair work is done, he doesn’t want the mass of the people to get in there. In case of unavoidable circumstances, allow them to come right now, use it…
Neil Salonen: 230 people at the moment.
Father: That is a hindrance to the repairs. No more, too many. You have the IOWC mobile units at the moment. But even though you are responsible, you don’t have to neglect your presidency at the HQ, because your main job now is the Day of Hope Festival. That is with IOWC, that is fine. But you have to think, as a president, to take care of the HQ. You have to oversee what the construction crew is doing. Because all these IOWC members are in the HQ, so …
Neil Salonen: I pay attention to every detail, Father.
Father: Kamiyama, you have to cooperate in his territory, otherwise we cannot bring success.
Mr Kamiyama answers to Father.
Father: Instead of holding workshops outside the city, it is better to hold workshops in the local church. Does the church have enough room to accommodate these people? [Discussion]. Basically, Father does not want workshops to be held out of town, better in local churches. But, when your number is increasing, and the same problem occurs in White Plains, you will have some other place for them to be held, but not far from the church and from New York. [Neil Salonen discusses the problem of space for guests of the Crusade with Father.
Father, in English: One week we give a lecture for .. training course. This period’s total is one week. So, you need every place one week… Special training course… Discussion goes on.
[Mr. Kamiyama speaking in Japanese]
[Father, in English:] This is Saturday and Sunday… [Discussion about workshops continue]. … [Father, in English:] If we have 300 members, at that time, we’ll use an IOWC commander. … Prepare a … place for young people. [Discussion goes on]. [Father, in English:] Increase to 300
members quickly.
Neil Salonen: We leave the members in the centers, and later they become IOWC members?
Father, in English: If you need members, you choose since after the 21-Day training course… strong members.
[Discussion continues in Japanese: Father, Mr. Sudo, Mr. Kamiyama. Father speaks a long time, without translation, on non-UTS. related topics, namely the mobilization for the coming campaigns].
[David Kim summarizes:] Father has been summarizing this strategy. By the time of the culmination of success of Yankee Stadium, we got to have 200,000 people who can be mobilized who can bring the success of Half a Million people for the Washington Monument Rally. Without that plan, we just cannot make Half a Million people. This has proven in the Korean strategy. All these local were scientifically allocated their locality. Nearly 2,000 chartered buses from every free-way, on the way from eight provinces directed towards Seoul. All the busing to the North was by our chartered buses, the same system. In order to make this, we got to have 20,000 [?] people by next year, in New York. You have to mobilize 200,000 on our side, our definite supporters, to attend in Washington. Picking up the season of cherry blossoms, we can easily fill the place with Half a Million people. Father asks you [?] and Mr. Kamiyama… 200,000… he is talking about the multiplication of the New York Church Family.
One problem is, how we are going to increase the membership. That is the only one thing. That is what your IOWC members are doing. IOWC is just a preparation for the Yankee Stadium Crusade. [Discussion about the theme, or title, e.g. “God Bless America” or “Day of Hope.”
Neil Salonen: The Bicentennial is definitely a good theme. God Bless America might be difficult for young people.
Father: Which title is good for us, not for the young devils.
Mr. Salonen: The image makes some difference.
David Kim: Father will discuss that, how we can bring success. The “Bicentennial” name will induce much audience. From the world’s point of view, it is small, but for America it is good. This is for America, to help America. The Day of Hope campaign will be world-wide, also historical.
[Discussion continued in Japanese.]
“New Hope Festival. How did Col. Pak do it? Celebration of Life?
David Kim: “New Hope Festival”, let’s simplify, too much confusion. The Jewish camp seems to make good street fighters. They are against us…
American leader: This is the Jewish especially, the cause many problems for us… in Philadelphia… directed against us.
David Kim: We have to learn Karate here too.
American leader: They are a very militant Jewish group. They are trying to prepare the people so that what happened by Hitler will never happen again. So, they train karate (?), rifles, weapons, legally, just five miles from here.
Neil Salonen: They are willing to break the law, though. They frequently do. [Discussion continues on that topic, including articles published against us in the militant Jewish media.]
[Father:] We have to make a statement. [Dr. Bergman did. Discussion goes on.]
David Kim: They attack, we have to fight back, or we become guilty. Give that kind of article immediately to me. Then, I … will discuss it with Father.
Father: The best answer is, we have to increase our number, show them what we are doing. Propaganda warfare. [Mr. Sudo asks questions. Father answers.]
Neil Salonen: In a few months, these people from phase one can become good State Leaders.
David Kim: As of now, we have no State Representative system.
Neil Salonen: There are still 14 church directors remaining back in the States.
Father: They do not necessarily represent the states. The training center will sent three pioneer workers to the state church HQ. There is no state representative. Everybody do their part, three people. Then if three people come to the Chicago metropolitan area, Chicago should be divided into three: one A pioneer from Barrytown, a B pioneer… and the old one has to do his own, too. The problem is, when you go to be acting as state director, he or she wants to control everything, instead of following Father’s instructions. In the place where he or she went, they have to multiply the people, 12, quickly.
Neil Salonen: Somebody has to take responsibility for the businesses… Barrytown is going to send the three pioneers, I know, but until they send three good pioneers, the pioneers they have now are may be not so qualified, according to Mr. Sudo, therefore, may the existing directors can remain until a qualified person arose.]
Father: Japanese sisters are sent there, they serve as unofficial liaison, they are doing such a thing, not legal papers.
Neil Salonen: We need at least one qualified American in every state to take care of the businesses.
Father: Later a qualified state representative will be appointed officially. [Discussion continues on that topic.]
Father: He will send more people to the 14 pioneer places. When time comes, who is the better one… those who did not receive training have to come here and take over, gradually. You have to send the 14 people, and everything will be fine. [Discussion] They will be sent. … [Discussion. Long comment by Mr. Kamiyama. Father speaks, too. No translation. Down payments on hotel].
Michael Warder: Many people are examining and investigating the (Science) Conference, to find out where the money comes from. So, can that money from Japan be transferred to the ICF [International Cultural Foundation] account in New York City?
Father: Yes.
Michael Warder: That has to be through ICF, otherwise they get worried.
Father: You have to introduce Neil to the prominent, or chairmen… the future, within our structure… We have been developing continuing relations through the leaders of each nation. So, your job is to introduce people to him, so that he can have a future follow up, future contacts; a future relationship should be set up. …
… in order to take care of 600 scholars, … conference attendees, at least 150 people should be mobilized. That means, as the president of the Unification Church, he has to take responsibility, even asking the local… So, one of our family members should be responsible for five professors. … We have to sell our idea, our heart to those coming to the Conference, to the visitors. PR work should be done by our contacts, sometimes a sister will take care of personal things, even if necessary go visit his room, smiling nicely, cleaning, actually the hotel will take care of that; actually, the field of our Unification heart we have to give. We have to let these people know him. You can give these renowned scholars a chance to know that we have been successful, because we are serving the people and taking care of them. This is Rev. Moon’s theme and his teaching. We are not going to the Unification Church to be influenced, or … Rev. Moon is going to influence you people; our spirit is to serve the people, you have to know this, that kind of propaganda. So, his name should be widely known when we have an international conference, he
is an international figure already right there. Give him a chance to associate. When you do some kind of … use old friends … let him know, the cannot be just a robot president, actually the president of you. NS: Actually, he keeps good touch. Father: That is why Father picked you, you are a nice administrative…
I don’t know what actually to understand. Father told you to write some letter to some of the professors or some of the big shots throughout the States and overseas, some letter written in his name. Did he do that? Not only America, also to the European countries. Those … people contacted by you should be followed up by our Family. So, you have to give the names of those associated in the past and the present. Let him know this, he will send an official letter, this is such and such a person, in your country, who is associated with it, why don’t you go and see what his situation is. Also in the United States…
Michael Warder: I have been corresponding with the European countries.
So… refer certain things as IFC (ICF?) to do so … as the president of the Unification Church. He might issue some letter at a later date. This kind of a link. Just to leave these people alone after the Conference… We have to follow up. We have to follow up. We you pioneer all the initial administrative part by yourselves, that is fine; but at a later stage, we will be urging the situation in which using the name of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon will be more effective for those who, in the past, had an association with us. In other words, to who have a contact with ICF have to refer to him, occasional greetings, an occasional letter. Recognize them … instead of putting all files in your office.
[In the background, church members have started singing]
Is it true that 150 Nobel Prize winners are still alive? [Yes] then, we have to try hard to bring over half of them, even though they are… Just sending a letter is not enough. We have to see them in person, or send our family members in London, in Europe, to ask them to please come; that kind of attitude may be good. Those who are too old to even stand up, that is fine, but those who are available, ask them to come over, to see the Rev. Moon at the conference. [MW: We are trying very hard with these people. One thing, in August many people move…]. So, September, work hard .. with these guys. Father expects you to be a nice guy, and efficient administrator, a responsible man, and Father expects you to bring at least 70 Nobel Prize winners, old or young. Four in the first conference. In Tokyo we had non, in the second one, we had four… [MW corrects]. At the London conference, we had twenty-one. Father believes in your ability, do your best. Mobilize the Family in Europe. By all means pray hard, work hard, to bring seventy at least. Already Father proclaimed ‘I will get the promise that 70 Nobel Prize winners are coming. So, how can you change his word, his word is God’s word, it is an ultimatum. You have to work hard until you die. You have to mobilize his power, and family members in each state. Don’t bear the burden by yourself. Share, see what happens, pray about it, it will be fulfilled. Even though they say that they will come, some devil will try to hinder so that they don’t come. So, we have to make constantly sure, ‘are you coming, really?’ with heart. ‘Yes I am coming’ ‘are you sure?’ ‘Yes …’ the next day, ‘please come.’ that kind of persistence is necessary in PR work.
He spoke to you three times on this matter, I remember. You just follow what he says, you will get them. Even Nobel Prize winners may not come. Then, our Family PR team will go there to accompany him, even though he has no money, and bring him over to New York. That kind of a strategy you have to use. By any means, these guys should be there. If we don’t have 70 Nobel Prize winners, we will surely fail that conference. This is Principle guidance. Even if other B- level professors don’t come, that is fine. At least these guys should come. The world will give more weight on that than for 600 presidents and deans of Princeton and Columbia… Instead of 600 people, 60 Nobel Prize winners.
Father will have a big picture with Nobel Prize winners. That picture answers everything; no need to telephone… let them know what it means. You and your staff have to pray hard. This is an unprecedented historical … the culmination of all scientists gathering together with 60 Nobel Prize winners, old and young doesn’t matter. Even if they have to be hospitalized, we will pay for it, that is my word. Keep busy, you are a busy man, at UTS… Also, you have to work hard… e.g., you have a Nobel Prize winner in Chicago; you have to send his name to Ron Pepper in Chicago: send somebody, and bring him over to the Conference. He has a university address … if somebody is in England, send the president of the English Unification Church, and Dennis Orme
has to send somebody to make sure he is coming, you have to go, I’ll escort you. Then, definitely they will come. The devil will tell them not to come. Their job is not to come, because NBC, this rabbi…
This time, Father invited some of the editors-in-chief of the news media in Korea, daily news, news magazines; he invited several people to attend this. A televisions broadcast might be made, nationally and internationally. So, Father is even thinking of news media people from Japan. All these news media people will feel, ‘Oh, these correspondents from Japan and England are here. They arouse their interest… national news media and press… use the television here. Three correspondents from each nation, Korea, Japan, France, England and Germany: 15 international correspondents dash to this international conference, then this howl New York center of the national and international media will be frightened.
They’ll have to put in on TV or whatever… this is the strategy. This is why Father invited them separately, as a group. Think of it, 70 Nobel Prize winners are here in the Waldorf Hotel. They’ll be amazed. Exclusive news will be coming out. Even is these guys make a boycott… like 800… 1 to 2 Million… the news media in America blocked. This time, outside they send wires, so they lose face. If AP and UPI don’t take our news, then Reuters from outside will come here and … We will corner them. They’ll have to. To don’t have to be too much optimistic. You have to push a little harder. We have not reached an optimistic position right now. Push a little harder. Understand? Need some help.
Evening, sleeping, pray hard, think 70 Nobel Prize winners. Double-check several times with our local families, in the name of President Salonen. Urge other countries. You will see how many Noble Prize winners are responding, how many promised, how many are not coming. Even, basically speaking, an itinerary representative of this Conference should go visit each nation. One month before, we must negotiate their acceptance, thank you very much. When they left, our family members in that country will go there… ..persuaded, impressed with our attitude. ‘What in the world is that movement? They gave the invitation, this nice vacation, the air ticket, now these people come…’ so, impressed, cannot forget. So, without any kind of suspicion they are coming. What kind of wonderful attitude it will be. So, we have to work hard underground through our PR work. That is the direction.
[Discussion with Father in Japanese].
[David Kim:] Father must have finished…
[American leader speaks to Father about buying a Seminary between here (UTS?) and Belvedere, and other properties. Discussing the price, etc. Prolonged discussion].
[Discussion apparently continues without Father].
