These questions and answers have been transcribed from tapes made during our Leader 1 s sessions with members and guests at Centers throughout the United States during his trip in March & April 1965.
What makes Mr. Moon think he is the Messiah?
Study the Principle and you will know. 0
Was there some specific point in your life when you realized that you were the one God had been seeking to fulfill the restoration?
From ch _ ldhood, I was clairvoyant and clairaudient. I could see through people, see their spirits . I had a very strong desire to live a high life, a life of high dimension, When I was 12 years old, I started praying for extraordinary things. I asked for wisdom greater then Sol- omon’s, for faith greater than the Apostle Paul’s, and for love greater than the love Jesus had. This is not a usual thing for one 12 years old. When I was 16, I knew definitely what my mission was to be. My thinking and feeling have always been very different from others. [Miss Kim: When a child is born in Korea, he is considered a year old at birth . His birthday is January 6, 1920, according to the lunar cal- endar. My book was wrong. I said he was 17 years old when Jesus ap- peared to him, but I was dependinq upon my memory. H~ says he was 16. That is 15 by your method of counting age.] I have also had numerous witnesses to my lifeo Many people told me who I was 0
Where do the qualifications for the Messiah come from? Many people have asked this question, and I don’t know the answer,
y 2~ d not let t _he_m___ as)5-__~stions befor~ _1::!f.~y_study the whole Prin-1 ciple thoroughly. In their understanding of the truth, you must build logically to the conclusion. · rf this Principle is Truth, then the con- clusion must be true . You must convince them with the Truth first. They should be convinced to follow this truth, even without our Master. O The Truth is so real and true, that it can be followed even without or apart from him. accept him. The qualifications alone will not persuade them to They have to accept the Truth, the Divine Principle, first. J That is why Jesus did not reveal his identityn He told the disciples not to tell people who he was.
Leader’s question: What kind of Messiah are they expecting? What a r e ~ the qualifications they expect? _J
Did I understand you correctly? Did you say that if they believe in Principle they don’t have to believe in the Messiah?
No , I meant you should teach them the truth thoroughly, and they should
2 MS-1 … follow the Principle by all means, even though there were no person behind it. They should find the conclusion, the being of the Messiah,
f by themselves through the Principle. They should find his mission or his personality through their understanding of the truth. ‘• The mission of the Messiah is not healing or performing miracles. A medium in Korea said this: “The mission of the Lord of the Second Ad~ vent is to bring the Truth, the words of God.” So if this Principle.is Truth and from God, then the one who brought this message is to be the one. The most important thing God wants me to do is to resurrect or re-create or reform the hearts of the . people~ and make Them heavenly ~e. I came to bring about reformation· of- tfie heart. With the — Principle or by the Principle, my mission is to make new hearts, new -~- persons. Then to make them free from the accusation of Satan. Satan constantly accuses people before God. My_ mission is tn chang.e .t.he l:!§arts of the people so that Sat-9-.n…has no one whom he can accuse qe_fQre God. Although Moses and Jesus performed miracles, they could not - ·· change the hearts of the people and make them free from Satan’s accu- sation.
All great religious leaders have represented differ- ent aspects of God, such as wisdom, or love, or a combination of these, like faith and love, or power and truth. Jesus seemed to represent to his followers and to Christians today, love and truth. Jesus failed in his mission. The method he used to open God’s dis- pensation was not successfulo Therefore, will the Second Advent be more related to, say, wisdom and power?
Yes, the Lord of the Second Advent is different in many ways. When Christians speak of love and truth in the New Testament, what they mean is very abstract. In the Lord of the Second Advent, these words are no longer abstract. How love and truth are related is important. It must become a reality, a substantial reality . In the Lord of the Second Advent, this is fulfilled. Therefore, he is more powerful and more wise. In him, those things are no longer abstract. They are reality. Therefore, it is greatly different from Jesus. ~hen you read the Bible, it appears as if Jesus knew everything. But he didn’t. He did not know how tFie fall of man took place as clearly as we do. He did not comprehend the history of restoration. The Lord to Come is the King of Wisdom and the Prince of Love.
Does Jesus understand now? Of course. Jesus stands in the position of a son to the Lord of the Second Advent, and calls him ‘’Father o ~• Jesus ranks among us as our elder brother. Those who receive revelations in prayer call him 11 Bro- theri.” Until the Lord of the Second Advent discovered the secret identity of Satan, those in Paradise did not know. That is why they called him “thief” when he revealed the crime before the throne of God. They felt he was stealing the field. By revealing the identity ( of Lucifer, he was going to take the sovereignty even of Paradise, which Jesus had had up to that time.
Was there a physicai iineage in the Second Advent? r Miss Kim: He hints tbat there is some link between the Jewish peo__p~ \ ~!_1_c:!_ _t}1e Korean--- ~-~}:.~..L..!?-~.1= _b,e ~)J._:J: ~D~Qt ~a~~. - ·we have man¥ cus - toms and traditions which are very like Jewish customs” There is a s aying that Korea is the Israel of the East.
What are the ramifications or implications of the lineage in the Second Advent?
Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. In so doing, he received the entire inheritance from John, who was the representative of the Old Testament dispensation. John didn’t realize this, but Jesus had to come under John and be baptized by him . In that way, he - received the inh.e ri tance __ of. Christianity. The world doesn It know this. To have t-h°Is inhe ritance, youmust win out over the old . The Lord of the Se- cond Ad ,·ent subjected himself to one who represented Christianity, and served him, thus taking the blessing away. This person repre~ s e nted the entire New Testament dispensation. The Master served him, but ~he man wasn’t aware of it.
As I understand it, our Leader discovered the secret crime of Satan, and stood before God accusing Sa t an , Would he elaborate on this?
Although I will explain this to you, you may not understand fully unless you yourself have had a spiritual experience. To find the highest truth, you must have the most even conscience. This is an oriental expression. You would say ‘clear’ conscience, but our term is ‘even’ conscience, meaning not biased or prejudiced. This is a horizontal level. Then the heart of God or the Spirit of God will work in a vertical way, and a 90° angle is made. If the con- s c ience is not even, the angle formed is not 90°, and you will re- ce i ve the wrong message or revelation. If the 90° angle is main- ~ained, when you face a problem you immediately know whether it is qood or bad. The reflection is very accurate. When you meet people and hear them ta.lk, you know immediately which is wrong and which is right. This is very important to receive anything . Then suppose you want to know about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. What is it? Up to a certain level, spirits can tell you what it is. But for the highest truth , spirits can~ot h lp you . They will _ not tell you because the y don ’ t know. 7 And God will not tell you l’”A”c… o u t ri ght. therefore you have to search, to find out by yourself . ,.J7ot-e.~ So , f rom this 90° position, you may ask God, “ Is this tree of the ~ knowledge of good and evil a real tree?” You immediately know that is not right. It is something else . You continuously inquire and eventually find out what it is. Then , quite naturall y, you will know that the tree has something to do with staining our blood . In ot h e r words, when you become one with God, you can know the answers. Yo u wi ll guess answers to your questions and bring them to God, say- in g, “Is it not this?” When it is correct , you will know, L I n tha t way , I discovered the crime of Satan . As you studied in
I n th is stage , man lost the tor t h e P r i nciple, Adam and Eve fell at the top of the Growth Stage . lg) of God . Man was created by the Word of God a n d, b y the f all of man , the Word was los t. Truth was Wor4
lost in the Growth Stage. So in this stage the Word must be recovered. Truth must be discovered. When Adam and Eve fell, God could not inter- fere with their fall because they were still im~erfect, still in the stage of the Indirect Dominion. In finding the truth, I codld not be told because I was still in the Indirect Dominion. I had to discover the Word by mys..e.ll. God could not reveal or teach me~ Until you-~ reach tne top of the Growth Stage, the point where Adam fell, spirits can teach you. Since Adam had already reached that point by himself, spirits can help you with any problem. But after you reach this stage, you are left alone. God will not teach you. You must find by your- self. If Adam had reached the top of the Perfection Stage, God or spirits would be free to teach you, because man has already reached that point by himself. The way is open. After I discovered the Divine Principle, the Truth, I had to work all alone without God ,--s --help ana-- ~ith no help from the s p f . i r t w ~ c o m e perfect- as Goff is, - to become one with Him, we have to become one with Him in words (in the truth), in personality~ and finally in heart. In this, God cannot help. From the top of the Growth Stage on up, then, is the responsi- bility and mission of the Lord of the Second Advent. This is his history, as well as the history of our church in terms of world res- toration. This is the course our church has been following, and this is the course the Lord of the Second Advent has been pioneering.
Many religions find it very easy to communicate with the spirit world, but they can only reach to the top of the Growth Stage. Christians find it very hard to communicate with this high level in the Perfection Stage. You must develop this center to form the 90° angle in order to truly communicate. Other religions know that this is the time of the Last Days. But their angles are not accurate. If you make a little mistake of even 1° at first, you will soon be off in the wrong direc- tion. Spiritual gifts are many and varied. You can communicate with any low spirit. But that is not important. Truth is important.
Did you have to work out all the details of the Principle yourself, or did you receive it?
If you know the Principle, you know these things in your heart. [Mrs. Choi: H;_e knew it by his wisd~I_!l, and then asked God if it was r..i.gh_t. He has done the most difficult part. It is easier for you to follow him.] ) In reading the Introduction to the Principle, we often in our first reading fail to recognize our Master’s struggle, What was it he kept constantly before him during this struggle? Faith in God, and conviction. I-knew that God was living. I knew O that God had chosen me for this mission. Therefore, Ioelieved that ( this wasthe only way for man to go, including myself. I couldn’t quit. ..
How Long did it take our Leader to go from the top of the Growth Stage to the top of the Perfection Stage? Seven years.
How do you manage to get along on three and four hours’ sleep a night?
If ycu knew you were goinq to die in three hours, would you sleep?
What is your attitude about people knowing of your visit? For the time being, would you prefer that we not mention that you have been here?
It is always best to teach the truth first. If the truth is accepta- ble to them as the revelation from God, then they will be led to the conclusion, and will be guided by the spirit world to know me. That is more natural. One should not be forced to accept the conclusion, because he will be repulsed. Teach the Principle first, intellectually, and guide the student to the spiritual experience by having him read books on the spirit world or taking him to a medium. Help him to have a s p iritual experience if possible. In this way, we lead the student to find the conclusion by himself. It is most thrilling for them. When you discover the most precious thing by yourself, you will not lose it, and you really know the value of it. But if you are told, you cannot see the value. We often lecture without giving the final conclu- sion~ Once they accept the truth without doubt, then they will also accept the conclusion. But if they are not sure about the content of the truth, then it is no use. Because it is so precious, we are very slow to present it. Another thing: Once they reject the conclusion, they will not be open-minded. We don’t want people to stumble. Often people will want to know not only the conclusion, but the person we ( mean as well. We must be very careful. It is all right to say Sun Myung Moon has been here, but don’t say who he is.
THE MASTER SPEAKS ON THE DIVINE PRINCIPLE MOVEMENT
Did we choose the Divine Principle, or did the Divine Principle choose us?
The Divine Principle chose you. The Divine Principle will find every- one on earth. It is a question of time. Since it is still early, the Div i ne Principle has found only a few peonle. Later there will be a sp i ritual hurricane, and people will spring up like mushrooms and respond very easily.
How large is the movement now? How many members does it have? What sort of coverage does this country have?
Th :.’:’ rc::>·vement in this country is very young. I don’t know how many men~er s we have. Often in a religious movement , the number does not show the strength of the movement. For instance, Catholics have a (_ s ~e&ter number in their membership than any other single denomination, but that doesn’t mean that it is the strongest movement. In this stage, n urr,.o e r is not important. The important thing is what kind of tradition we es :.a blish for future generations. The early followers should set up a 7e~y high pattern of life and work so that others can follow. We wn nt t o s P-t un ~ snlendid standard of faith and life. The movement
in Korea started in 1954. We have been stressing quality rather than quantity in this ten years. In Korea, our movement is recognized by the government and the people as the strongest movement, full of spirit r’ and dedication . \..
Is the move me nt set up as a corporation?
For legal reasons only.
How is your work financed?
r Everyone makes his own livin. It is our system that no one i s paid~ (,~~ vJe”don’t want to be paid. If we are paid now, God will say later, “You \)<1-ri· have received your reward already.” This is our own work. We are only ~ happy to do it. How can we be paid by others? We all work and contri- ~-:J. bute funds which are used to publish our book, pamphlets, for travelling, sending missionaries to new fields, and so forth.
Do you have study groups and worship services?
In Korea we do. We have worship services on Sunday, prayer groups on Wednesday evening, group meetings on Friday evening . Then there are other meetings such as young people, high school students, and college students. The women meet during the day. We lecture the Principle every night at the lecture hall. Here in America we do not do that yet, because of the small numbers in our Centers. We believe that our living itself should be worship and prayer. This 24-hour dedication to God is very characteristic of our movement.
Are most of the people in this movement single?
No, we have many married couples.
Is communal living necessary in order to embrace the Principle? No, it is not necessary, but those who do it find it more effective in working for this cause. But it is not required. In Korea we don’t even have enough space to contain all the members for a meeting, much less living together.
Can you embrace the Principle and live by it without quitting your job and devoting full time to it?
If you give up your job, who will feed you? We have to make our own livings until our groupisstrong enough to finance and support full- time workers. At this stage, we all have to have some kind of living. Yes, of course you can live by th~ Principle and give your support to it without giving up your means of livelihood. Many of our most dedi- cated members have full-time jobs in executive capacities with companies which have nothing to do with Principle. But to really spread this work , some full-time members will be necessary . The Centers must be
maintained, someone must lecture, some must witness. But I would also advise that some work and set an exemplary example for others to fol- low. ( When you realize that this is the hiqhest truth and a workable truth, then you are willing to devote your life to this precious work.
When will this mission be fulfilled? It depends upon the effort of the followers. If we do not work effec- tively and truly, it may prolong the time. But if we do our best, we can shorten the time.
How many members are there in Japan now?
Ove r 1,0 00. They are mostly young people, and very active. Even the Jap&.nese government is interested in our movement because of these young people’s sincerity and philosophyo Many influential people are interested in our movement, and some are already members. We are getting quite a bit of attention in Japan.
I stayed in Japan for two weeks before I came here. During that time, five leading members of Buddhism and Shintoism 7oined our group throuqh the guidance and messages of the spirit world. In this way, unification of the world will be fulfilled. Otherwise, how could we unify all religions? I
In Korea, we have several Buddhist friends. They also witness that our movement will unify all religions. Buddha comes to them and says that his mission is now over, and that his followers should go to Mr. Moon because he is the one to unify all religions “like rivers run into the ocean.” Confucius says the same thing in a different expression. He also tells his followers to go to our movement, that hi 3 own mission is over.
If you’re working full time, are you required to fast? Fasting is not a requirement. We like to do it because, by fasting, first of all your health is improved. Secondly, you gain spiritually. Th ird ly, you can help others by fasting and praying for them.
If you regard our movement as just another denomination, you will be makL!lg a great mistake. This is not a denominational movement, this is net a sect, it is not just one religion.
To ~each to the present time, I have had numerous witnesses from the s rH r i·i: world through people on earth. When I was in prison in North Kc:i.::ea under the communist regime, I was not allowed to open my mouth 0 ~1 eligious matters. There were three very intellectual young men i ~ the same cell with me. But 14 men came to me with messages from ‘: r1~ ~pi rit world, and asked me if the testimony given was true . In
that pri s on, I was watched so closely by the warden and the guards that they h ad to sneak in to talk with me.
This is the only movement which can save America. There is nothing else to do. The relationship between Moses and Jesus is l ike that between seed and treeo Without the seed, the tree canno t grow . Our mission is like the fruit of the tree. Without the tre e , t he f ruit cannot be borne. By believing in and accepting Jesus, you have already fulfilled the Laws of Moses. By accepting the Divine Principle and acknowledging the Lord of the Second .Advent, you have- al r eady ful- filled the G9spel of Jesus and Moses’ Law. Without Moses’ foundation, Jesus could not have come. Without Jesus’ foundation, I could not have come, and could not fulfill my mission. By the fulfillment of my mission, I fulfill the missions of Jesus and Moses. We are not d…§.serting Jesus or b~raying him, but we are fulfi;L _l,t_l}g~_E?,ye:r::ythl!lg~ This is also true with other religions. Founders like Confucius, Lao-Tse, Buddha, and so forth, fulfill their missions through me. So they send me their followers. Our message includes the truth of all religions, and clarifies the doctrines of Christianity.
