Eve, the Heart: Finance, Education, and Health Care

By now, my friends who have been following my notes will have observed that my thought is triune rather than dualistic. In today’s note, I will develop the triune theme and introduce a new term: Heartwing. And I should add right away an observation for the sake of my Unificationist friends, in order to distinguish the the “heartwing” from a similar term that they use, namely, “headwing.”

And for those of my friends that are not familiar with these terms, I think you will find that these terms are both interesting and useful. So, first, I will briefly discuss the terms “headwing”; second, I will discuss “heartwing”; and finally, I will argue that the areas of finance, education, and health care should be the responsibility of the heart, as opposed to the mind (brain, government) or the soul (stomach, private sector).

This may appear to be a bundle to accomplish in a note; so, I will be brief. I will start with the Unificationist concept of “headwing.”

Headwing: Uniting Cain and Abel

The term “headwing” comes from Heilsgeschichte, or salvation history, which sees history as the struggle of Cain and Abel as preparation for the coming of the Messiah, “the last Adam, . . . a life-giving spirit” (1 Cor. 15:45). The traditional view of politics places a historical conflict between Right Wing and Left Wing, in such a way that one must defeat and destroy the other. This is, for example, the view of Marxism, which proposes that the Left Wing has a historical destiny to conquer and destroy the Right Wing.

So, in this context of historical conflict between these two sides, there appeared in the 1960s the view called “Headwing Thought,” proposed by the Movement founded by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. This view proposed that the solution for the conflict between Left Wing (Cain) and Right Wing (Abel) was not for one to destroy the other–as Communists proposed–but rather for the two to unite as brothers under God’s love. The pattern for this union was the union of Esau (left Wing) and Jacob (Right Wing) in Isaac’s family. That was the essence of “headwing thought.”

In contrast, I am introducing today “heartwing thought.” The significance of the “heartwing thought” is the following: We are leaving behind the *dualistic* view of history as the struggle of Cain and Abel. Instead, a better way of looking at history now is a triune interaction of soul, heart, and mind. I will make this discussion brief, but this is a really exciting way of looking at the current situation in the world, because it explains much of is happening right now. So, what is Heartwing?

Heartwing: The Third Power in Politics, Culture, and Economy

In order to explain “heartwing,” I will review a few basic points of my previous notes. Those of my friends that have been following my notes will have noticed that I believe the second coming of Jesus Christ has already taken place, namely, in the generation born after World War I. As I see it, the Heilsgeschichte, or salvation history, ended in December 2012. From that date on, humankind is entering the age of returning to paradise. This means that there is no more conflict of Cain and Abel, no more dualistic struggle, no more large-scale wars as humankind experienced in the 20th century.

Instead of dualistic struggle, what humankind has now is a triune collaboration among three major cultural spheres. And these three cultural spheres correspond to the three powers that comprise the human personality, namely, the will, the emotion, and the intellect. So, here is how these three cultural spheres line up:

Will: Adam, soul, stomach, Jewish cultural sphere

Emotion: Eve, spirit, heart, Christian cultural sphere

Intellect: Serpent, mind, brain, Islamic cultural sphere.

The heart is the sphere of Eve. But Eve has been waiting for the appearance of Adam, or the Messiah, for millennia. As I believe it, the “Adamic generation” is the generation born after World War I, which is called The Greatest Generation. They are the young people that fought in World War II and became the parents of the Baby Boomers.

Adam is the second coming of Jesus Christ, the true man–and paraphrasing Nietzsche, the appearance of true man saves “the woman” in woman (Zarathustra). Therefore, if one observes history after World War I, one can ascertain that, since then, women have been making astounding progress in all areas: science, technology, business, engineering, politics, diplomacy, social sciences, and so forth.

But in terms of economics, most people are still going by the old concepts of socialism vs. capitalism. In the old way of thinking, “socialism” means control by government, and “capitalism” means control by the private sector. Thus, socialism is “power to the brain, or Serpent,” and capitalism is “power to the stomach, or Adam.”

One can see right away that there is no space for Eve in this dualistic way of thinking. In order to break this dualistic model, I am introducing “heartwing thought.” This is the view that sees three powers instead of two. And areas such as education, health care, and finance should be in the hands of the heartwing rather than brain-wing or stomach-wing.

This means that education, health care, and finance should be controlled neither by the private sector nor by the government, but rather by an independent third power, the power of the heart. The model is the human body. In the body, distribution of wealth (the blood) and healing is carried out under the control of the heart area; and education has more to do with values (the heart) than the mere dissemination of information.

So, I will conclude here. Yes, there is much to sort out, but the main point is that there is a third power coming to the world, a power that will break the deadlock between Right vs. Left. This is the power of Eve, the source of hope. By calling it “Eve’s power” I don’t mean that it will be made up of women only. “Eve,” in this sense, does not refer to gender but rather to heart–as contrasted to brain and stomach. It is an “independent” way of thinking, which seeks the benefit of the nation rather than the hegemony of one or another of the two main parties.
