A Soldier for God: Remembering Dr. Bo Hi Pak

2021-01-15 · Source: tparents.org

It’s been two years since the late Dr. Bo Hi Pak, an early Unificationist leader, ascended to the spirit world. Today marks the 2nd anniversary of his World Level Seonghwa Observance Ceremony, held in Korea on January 15, 2019. Unificationists in the U.S. and internationally paid their respects to Dr. Pak with special tributes worldwide. Today, let us remember his life of service lived for the sake of others.

Born August 18, 1930, Dr. Pak was a lieutenant colonel in the Korean army when he joined the Unification movement in the 1950s. He played a considerable role as part of the original 36 Couples, blessed in marriage with Ki Sook Yoon by Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) co-founders Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, affectionately known as True Parents. Dr. Pak quickly became Rev. Moon’s “right-hand man” and “top deputy” as the translator and voice of True Parents for many decades.

On January 12, 2019, Dr. Pak ascended to the spirit world at the age of 90 (Korean age). He lived a truly rich life as one of the many early disciples of Rev. Moon, selflessly serving his community and contributing a long list of accomplishments and victories. Most notably, through CAUSA International and its subsidiaries, Dr. Pak helped frame and implement a multifaceted strategy to enable the U.S. and democratic world to defeat communism during the final years of the Cold War.

Additionally, Dr. Pak served as president of the International Summit Council for World Peace, the

Association for the Unity of Latin America (AULA), and the International Security Council. Through these high-level organizations, Dr. Pak was able to bring royalty, presidents, heads of state, prime ministers, and global leaders of society to Rev. and Dr. Moon, including meetings with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow and Kim Il Sung in North Korea.

Of his many legacies, the Little Angels Children’s Folk Ballet of Korea remains an extraordinary gift to the world from Rev. and Dr. Moon that was personally guided by Dr. Pak’s innate sense of beauty and charm. His powerful faith, intelligence, and charisma influenced many great providential projects, including the World Media Association, News World, Noticias del Mundo, Ultimas Noticias (Uruguay), and The Washington Times.

In 1978, Dr. Pak published the book Truth Is My Sword, his testimonial to Rev. and Dr. Moon which he dedicated to them:

“Reverend and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon opened up a totally new area of being for me. Truth Is My Sword is dedicated to them. They gave me rebirth and purpose in life. Because of them, God was made real in my heart. Through them I gained vision and hope for the world in which we live. The teachings of Reverend and Mrs. Moon can be summed up in these few words: love and sacrifice for God and humanity.”—Dr. Bo Hi Pak

As a beloved mentor and father figure to many, who devoted his life to God’s providence, let us honor Dr. Pak’s legacy of love and service to others.

15 Jan 2019 World Level Seonghwa Observance for Dr. Bo Hi Pak

On Monday, January 14, the Family Federation for a Heavenly USA held a Seonghwa Observance Ceremony for Dr. Bo Hi Pak at The Washington Times in Washington, D.C., matching the hour of the World Level Seonghwa Observance held in Korea. Leaders and Tribal Messiahs gathered in Las Vegas for Tribenet 2019, and congregants of the Clifton Family Church, Belvedere Family Church and Dallas Family Church also held a Seonghwa Observance during the same hour.

Dr. Ki Hoon Kim, Vice President of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) International and Chairman of the North American Region wrote a heartfelt letter he composed for the occasion.

In spite of freezing temperatures and seven inches of snow over the previous two days, over 140 people came out to honor the exemplary life of one of the most steadfast defenders of True Parents, Dr. Bo Hi Pak. Mrs. Keiko Patton and her capable team of cooks provided a substantial repast in advance of the 6:00 p.m. event held in The Washington Times’ Arbor Ballroom, which was designed with significant input from Dr. Pak.

Washington, D.C. Family Church Pastor Dr. Achille Acolatse’s Invocation set the tone for a powerful celebration of the love, life and offering of Dr. Pak. Dr. Michael Jenkins, Chairman of Universal Peace Federation (UPF) USA, gave a Seonghwa Address in which he praised the absolute filial heart of Dr. Pak and encouraged everyone to apply that mindset in 2019 as we prepare for the dramatic changes coming on the foundation of True Parents’ desperate desire to save everyone in this world.

Notably, William Lay, Esq. and Dr. Thomas Ward traveled on short notice from New York and Connecticut, to share their inspirational experiences from many years of working directly with the outspokenly faithful Dr. Pak. Mr. Dan Fefferman expressed his thanks to Dr. Pak for the long-time example of fighting to protect True Parents, and for his moment of fame in being named one of True Father’s “lieutenants” by the New York Times. William Lay read sample legal testimonies in which Dr. Pak proudly and comprehensively proclaimed True Parents. Equally inspiring testimonies were given by local Unificationists Mr. Larry Moffitt, Mr. Robert Abendroth, Mr. William Gertz, Mrs. Judith Lejeune and Mrs. Cheryl Wetzstein. As a conclusion to the testimonies, the American Freedom Coalition (AFC) brothers and sisters offered a rousing rendition of Generation of Righteousness. This was

energizing preparation for the powerful benediction offered by New Hope Family Church Pastor Jim Boothby and the heartfelt cheers of Eog Mansei lead by the Family Federation for a Heavenly USA District 1 Korean Evangelical Association (KEA) Pastor Rev. Young Chul Jang.

Las Vegas Observance

“What an incredible honor to be gathered with over 120 Blessed Family representatives from around America at the International Peace Education Center (IPEC) in Las Vegas for TribeNet 2019. We were able to pause the program to observe the World Level Seonghwa Ceremony of Dr. Bo Hi Pak or, as many in the room refer to him, Colonel Pak. We heard a wonderful Seonghwa main address from Dr. Kim and we were able to hear from people who had different testimonies and different kinds of personal experiences with Dr. Pak. Some of the stories bring you back, some of the stories bring a tear to your eye, and many of the stories make you laugh. We remember a man so full of zest and power for God and True Parents, willing to put his life on the line at any given moment to protect True Father.

“When we consider the horizon line of 2020 in sight, we all know we have to pull everything we’ve got out of ourselves to accomplish the mission before us so when we think of a man like Colonel Pak, a man who was dedicated to absolute victory and would take nothing less, we think of him as the standard of a loyal son and a fantastic, inspiring and loving elder brother. Strong in his masculine nature, but also very sensitive in his care, humility and sensitivity to others.

“All the people in the room are here because they’re either active or really want to be active in their Tribal Messiahship, and it’s a no-brainer that the stories around Dr. Pak’s life serve as an inspiration to them because in so many ways he was pioneering uncharted territories in all the various missions he did for True Father. When we see the great work that he did, I think it reminds everybody that we can do it. True Mother really wants to use this opportunity for heaven to receive his life as a condition for Victory 2020 here on earth.”

Belvedere Family Church Observance

Contributed by Rev. Edner Pierre-Louis

An intimate gathering of our elder American brothers and sisters from the Belvedere Family Church community gathered at 6:00 p.m. at the Belvedere Training Center, the exact place where Dr. Pak translated for True Father every Sunday morning in the 70s and 80s.

Local pastor Dr. Drissa Kone gave the opening remarks and Mr. Masahisa Kobayashi delivered a moving Seonghwa message. Rev. Juanita Pierre- Louis offered the benediction and Mr. Steve Honey emceed. Mr. Tom Corley gave the opening prayer. The observance was short and sweet and nostalgic with testimonies given by those gathered expressing how special Dr. Pak had made each of them feel in those early days of the church in America. Francisco Randon, a local Unificationist, gave a testimony about his time as Dr. Pak’s driver, and Charles Patterson, local Unificationist, shared his relationship with Dr. Pak at East Garden Estates as security. Kum Hee Fontaine, who is a spiritual daughter of Dr. Pak, shared about her relationship with her spiritual father and her visit with him just three weeks prior to his ascension. She knew Dr. Pak for over 40 years and shared for over an hour.

Clifton Family Church Observance

Contributed by Pastor Manoj Jacob

The Clifton Family Church community held a distinguished memorial service for Dr. Bo Hi Pak at the same time as his Seonghwa ceremony in Korea. As soon as members heard about Dr. Pak’s ascension, many of them contacted us about the Seonghwa details and shared about what an amazing son Dr. Pak was. Around 70 Unificationists gathered at the Clifton Family Church. Mrs. Noriko Sprague greeted everyone and, after a couple of songs, Pastor Manoj Jacob read Dr. Pak’s biography. Mr. Toshi Tagawa prepared a short version of Dr. Pak’s famous “Truth is My Sword” video, which was very moving. Mr. Ken Owens prepared a photo montage with hundreds of pictures from Dr. Pak’s life. Those pictures brought back a lot of memories and brothers and sisters felt grateful for Dr. Pak.

There were many moving testimonies, one from Mr. Kazushi Miyoshi, who worked with Dr. Bo Hi Pak, Mr. Ken Owens, who traveled and also worked with Dr. Pak, Mrs. Marivic Ibok, who lived with Dr. Pak and his family for many years in the USA, Korea and Hong Kong, Mr. Joseph Tegha, who also worked with Dr. Pak, and our youth pastor Mr. Yasutaka Ozwa who was inspired by Dr. Pak. Everyone testifies Dr. Bo Hi Pak as a righteous son of God and True Parents, a true parental figure and mentor to them.

Pastor Manoj Jacob gave a brief memorial message sharing his experiences with Dr. Pak and encouraged everyone to stand up for Truth as Dr. Pak did. Dr. Bo Hi Pak left an unparalleled legacy for God True Parents. He gave his life to make True Parents stand up together with many world leaders.

Dr. Ki Hoon Kim’s Letter on the Occasion of Dr. Bo Hi Pak’s Ascension The following is a letter written by Dr. Ki Hoon Kim, Vice President of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) International and Chairman of the North American Region on the occasion of the ascension of Dr. Bo Hi Pak.

When I heard of Dr. Bo Hi Pak’s ascension, l thought of his life spent testifying to True Parents I remember him as a courageous, heavenly general who attended True Parents as they paved the way for the providence of restoration in America. I give thanks to Dr. Pak for his investment and relentless work ethic over a great period of time. All the American members firmly believe that Dr. Pak will continue working with True Father in the spiritual world to ensure the victorious completion of the providence, which True Mother is now guiding as she ceaselessly invests and offers devotions for the providence of Cheon ll Guk.

We all know something about the path forged by Dr. Pak for the providence in the United States. To mention all his accomplishments is not easy. He did so much, and–as a parent, father, and teacher–he loved all the American members who walked shoulder to shoulder with him on his course. Together with the members, he testified about the core teachings of True Parents and developed the providence in America. As one of the very first missionaries to the United States, as one who both witnessed and took positions such as chairman of The Washington Times, he invested his heart and soul on the front line of the U.S. providence alongside True Parents every single day.

Dr. Pak, thank you so much for all you have done!

May you always be with True Parents, and just as you stood with us, becoming the center of many heart-moving testimonies, please guide us and continue to take the lead in True Parents’ providence, even from the spiritual world.

We would like to take this time, through this Seonghwa ceremony being conducted in Washington, D.C., New York and Las Vegas at the same time as Korea, to reflect and reminisce on your work, and to offer our prayers and blessings as you ascend to the heavenly realm. All our churches across the United States will join us in prayer this coming Sunday.

Dr. Pak, you invested your extraordinary efforts without reserve.

All members will remember you and will join the Victorious course of True Parents that you walked.

I sincerely pray that you will now be reunited eternally with your dearly departed wife amid the blessings and grace of Heavenly Parent and True Parents.

In Memoriam Dr. Bo Hi Pak, (born Aug 18, 1930), 36 Couples, ascended January 12, 2019, 7:30 a.m.

The Seonghwa ceremony and rites will be held Tuesday, January 15, 2019

May our Heavenly Parent welcome the spirit of Dr. Bo Hi Pak into the core of the Kingdom of Heaven in Heaven. Our sincere condolences and prayers for Dr. Pak’s family and clan.

Dr. Pak truly lived a rich life, but now he joins Mrs. Pak and True Father in spirit world. Among the many early disciples, Dr. Pak brought a unique set of accomplishments and victories. He lived the life of service, as translator, and as the voice and mouthpiece for True Parents for decades. He helped to frame and implement a multifaceted strategy to lift the U.S. and the democratic world to defeat communism, with CAUSA International and subsidiaries during the final years of the Cold War.

Dr. Pak brought real-world leaders to sit together with True Parents and make foundations for multiple endeavors in the future building of the Cheon Il Guk. He defined and built art and culture as an important means to build the Ideal society. He raised a leadership of “TOP GUNS” that went on to build and create great things for the future kingdom.

He was our mentor, a true father figure for all of us who had the honor and privilege to be among his intimate disciples. He will be welcomed into the original home of God with the same degree of enthusiasm that he put into his life of service to God and our True Parents and humanity.

Dr. Pak was born on August 18, 1930 in Chung Nam Province (100 miles south of Seoul), Korea. On June 1, 1950, he entered the Korean Military Academy as a cadet. The war broke out twenty-five days later. Later in life he drew on that experience when he shared how the devastation of war had been seared into his heart and mind. He would tell us that he was surprised and even impressed by the ferocity and loyalty of the North Korean soldiers only to find out that they were chained to their posts and had no alternative but to fight or to die.

Dr. Pak was a lieutenant colonel in the Korean army when he joined the church in the 1950s. He and Ki Sook Yoon were blessed by Father and Mother in the 36 Couples Blessing (March 1, 1961). Dr. Pak (in the early years he was affectionately known as Col. Pak) served our True Father selflessly was often called Father’s “right-hand man” or “top deputy.”

Dr. Pak’s faith, intelligence and charisma impacted the leading providential projects, particularly in the media, including World Media Association, News World, Noticias del Mundo, Ultimas Noticias (Uruguay) and most especially the movement’s flagship, The Washington Times.

In the fight against communism, it was Dr. Pak who was given the responsibility to lead the charge. He personally shaped CAUSA International to counter attack Marxism-Leninism, first in Latin America and then in the United States. In the mid-1980s, CAUSA lectures were taught around the world catching the attention of opinion-makers, and religious and political leaders. And no matter the language, the culture or the ideological setting, Dr. Pak won the hearts of everyone. Time after time, “Truth is My Sword” was shown at conferences about his experience dealing with Congressman Donald Fraser. There was never a dry eye in the house as he stood and said: “I am a proud Korean – a proud Moonie – and a dedicated anti-Communist and I intend to remain so the rest of my life.”

Of his many legacies, the Little Angels Children’s Folk Ballet of Korea is at the top of the list. This extraordinary gift to the world by our True Parents was personally guided by Dr. Pak’s innate sense of beauty and charm. In 2010, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, Dr. Pak brought the Little Angels to the 22 nations that extended aid to Korea, either military, medical or other support, and to thank the surviving veterans and their families. Each morning he spoke to the children, not as an illustrious leader but as a grandfather and as a former soldier who personally knew that Korea’s existence was thanks to the unselfish sacrifices of so many.

Dr. Pak served as president of The Summit Council for World Peace, the Association for the Unity of Latin America (AULA), and the International Security Council and through these high-level organizations, he was able to bring royalty, presidents, heads of government and prime ministers and the key shakers of society to our True Parents.

No matter the circumstances, Dr. Pak always testified to the True Parents. That was his purpose in life and True Parents always looked forward to Dr. Pak’s testimony at the breakfast table in East Garden. When the movie “Rocky” came out in the 1970s, he brought a large blow up photo of the boxer but with True Father’s face. True Parents laughed with unbridled joy. Dr. Pak always brought love and affection to our True Parents and to the members when he translated Father’s words on Sunday mornings. Dr. Pak testified to True Parents about the members!

He was the President of the Universal Ballet Foundation, which included the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C. and launched the Panda Motors Corporation in the United States, Hong Kong, and China. It was Dr. Pak who played an instrumental role in the breakthrough providential events including meetings with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow and Kim Il Sung in North Korea.

In 2004, Dr. Pak fell victim to a scam and, unable to repay his debts, had to serve 2 years and 3 ½ months in prison. Upon his release, he wrote a letter to the members giving an account of his experiences in prison. In the letter he recalled the mission of John the Baptist who came with the mission to testify about Jesus but ended up dying in prison. Dr. Pak said he would be willing to die in prison if it could indemnify the failure of the first John the Baptist. Such was Dr. Pak’s resolute determination to live his faith and attend our True Parents.

No memoriam can fully give credit to Dr. Pak and honor the many deeds, accomplishments and the many lives, who were touched by his love and ability to bear witness to our True Parents.

We truly thank Dr. Pak for a life well served to the providence and pray for the family and clan.

Since the announcement of his passing, accolades and testimonies are pouring into Facebook, including:

“Col. Pak, your place in our hearts cannot be fully expressed. Your deep voice and boundless enthusiasm seemed to flow out of you as if it came from True Father or from a mystic mountain. You are Heaven’s gain today. Please keep us in your thoughts!”

“Thank you for your tireless efforts.”

“Great man. Great memories.”

“Dr. and Mrs. Bo Hi Pak were both born for a great purpose. We all want to celebrate the fulfillment of that purpose and support your transition as good spirits and a BCF. We pray for a peaceful transition and a great welcome from all of our brothers and sisters. Thank you. Thank your family.”

“THANK YOU SIR!!!”

“Praying for your peaceful ascension. Congratulations to a life well lived! Thank you.”

“Dr. Bo Hi Pak, we pray for a smooth and safe transition as you are making your way to our HP and True Father in the spirit world.”
