I had the honor of attending Father’s [Sun Myung Moon’s] Sunghwa ceremony on September 15-16 [, 2012] in Seoul, South Korea. I was seated in the fourth level right opposite the stage where the coffin was placed.
I will never forget that day. It was the most profound and elaborate funeral ceremony I have ever witnessed. There was no other funeral like it. Even the funerals of the world’s most powerful leaders didn’t come close. Father’s Sunghwa, which followed a 13-day mourning period, was held in Gapyeong in Cheongshim Peace World Center.. Men dressed in black and women dressed in white. Close to 40,000 mourners and dignitaries from around the world jammed the Cheongshim Peace World Center Those who couldn’t get in watched it on huge flat-screen TVs outside the complex. It was also watched by millions of people around the world.
The miracle at the Sunghwa ceremony
Imagine yourself sitting in a room with thousands of people sobbing and crying at the same time. Truly, it was the greatest experience I have ever had. The Sunghwa ceremony was supposed to be a happy ceremony. As thousands of brothers and sisters and other mourners jammed the stadium in silence, waiting for Father’s body to enter the stadium, so eerie the silence was, you could hear a pin drop. Suddenly, as Father’s body entered the stadium, mourners, overwhelmed by spiritual phenomena, much like a gust of wind had hit inside the stadium, all mourners burst out in a cry-in unison, sobbing and crying at the same time. I will never forget those ardent moments.
But what amazed me the most, was Mother’s strength in overcoming the overwhelming difficulties that struck our church in the early years after Father’s ascension. At the ceremony, Mother sat at her chair looking so sad and lonely, that gave the feeling that the sky had fallen down. But the next day, September 16, Mother appeared in purple gown with a Staff/Scepter in her hand, declaring her strength and authority. Looking at it now, it’s amazing how strong Mother is. With her total love for God and for Father and for us, her children, she managed to guide us to safety through turbulent and dark years. Thank you, True Mother!
