Nathan was born on September 26, 1949 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He grew up with an older sister, Marian, and younger brother, Jerry. His family and friends called him “Richie.”

As a child, Nathan loved fishing, Scrabble, the beach, and working hard. Raised in the Jewish faith, he became a born-again Christian in his early twenties and traveled around America.

He was introduced to the Unification Movement by Beverly Berndt at Amherst College, MA and later joined in October 1974. At the time, he was living in a cabin studying the Bible and Taichi.

He loved to tell stories about putting up posters in NYC and DC to announce Rev. Moon’s speeches, missionary outreach in Vermont, working in fish businesses in Philadelphia and Seattle, and about his 40- day mission trip to Turkey.

Nathan was introduced to Debbie Smith by Rev. Moon in May 1979 and married in the Holy Blessing at Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 1, 1982.

Settling in Seattle, WA they were blessed with their eldest two children. Soon after, at the invitation of Dr. Bo Hi Pak, the family relocated to Arlington, VA to manage Gene’s Deli. The family was warmly embraced by Dr. and Mrs. Pak and their children. Later, Nathan was inspired to start his own deli, opening up Ely’s, then Deb’s Deli. Their two younger children were born during these years.

While managing his deli, he began a flower business that he and Debbie continued to develop for over 20 years, winning the hearts of the people he worked with thanks to his humor and generosity.

During those years Nathan found great joy volunteering as an ESL teacher, coaching his kids’ basketball teams, reading bedtime stories and running a chess club at night in the Deli.

Just two years after moving to their first home in Manassas, VA in 1995, Nathan and his family moved to Ireland for missionary work for a challenging but rewarding two years.

Returning to the US, Nathan wanted to expand his ability to serve others by becoming a lawyer, finishing his degree at age 55. He practiced law from 2006-2013.

After battling Alzheimer’s for more than five years, Nathan was able to celebrate his 36th anniversary with Debbie, just before he passed on July 3, 2018.

Nathan was truly a loving and strong father, husband and friend. He lived his life to make the world a better place and bring joy to God, True Parents and everyone he met.

Nathan is survived by his siblings Jerry Loew and Marian Lancaster, his children and grandchildren: Ely Youngil and Vicky – children Zach and Caspian; Yoshi and Shige Mori (Shige ascended 6/12/16 in a boating accident) – children Yumika, Julia and Naomi; Gene and Andrea – children Kavina, Natalie and Archer; and Virginia-Rose Loew and her fiancé, Kohki Nakahira.
