In Memory of Heng Kiat Lim (1963 - 2018)

Heng Kiat Lim was born on July 15, 1963 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as the youngest of five children, with one older brother and three older sisters. His father was a businessman who passed away at a young age and his mother has lived as a housewife.

Heng Kiat was first introduced to the Divine Principle in the early 1980’s by his sister, Yoke Chin Lim, who received the Marriage Blessing in the 6,000 Couples Blessing with Manfred Weber from Switzerland. Heng Kiat joined the Unification Movement in Chicago in 1992 after attending a local university and receiving a Master’s Degree in Communication and Media Studies.

In December 2013, Heng Kiat was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal (Metastasis) cancer and received ongoing treatment during the last four and one-half years of his life. He is survived by his mother, his four siblings, and his wife, Mari.

Heng Kiat’s Personal Testimony

Everyone has a story. In fact, even a bird, an insect or a plant has a story to tell.

My story is of a boy who’s looking for his father. My father passed away at an early age. He was only 39. I was born 3 days later. I had always wondered what having a father would be like. As I grew older, I found the ideal father in God. In Him, I could confide everything. And I truly trusted God.

Talking to God has always been such a comfort to me. Even now, and He never disappoints. In every journey of my life, God has been my strength and my source of courage. His Holy Spirit powers my life more so than ever. I feel lost without my Heavenly Father.

My sister is my spiritual mother. She encouraged me to study the Divine Principle in the early 1980’s. Back then the church had a Center in Petaling Jaya (Malaysia) which was close to my home. I attended several two-day workshops and got to know the local members as well as Takashi and Genie Kagawa.

Soon after I left Malaysia for the United States for further studies, I attended Northern Illinois University from August of 1987 through May of 1991.

I joined the Unification Church in 1992 at the Chicago Sheridan Road Center. Prior to that, in late summer of 1991, I attended the seven-day workshop at Gilman Camp. I then attended the 21-day workshop in Louisville, Kentucky. Bob and Kimiko Mansur drove us there. That’s when I met Rev. Jong Bok Hong for the first time, and Rev. Purnell Spicer was my lecturer. It was also there that I got to meet all of the brothers and sisters from the Chicago Center. The experience was truly exhilarating and I was surrounded by so much of God’s love.

When I returned to my home after the workshop, I spent the weekend with the Mansur family in Rockford, Illinois and fundraised with Danny Landreth. In 1992, I finally asked Rev. Hong for permission to be part of the Chicago Center as a full-time member.

I initially received the Blessing on August 25, 1992 as part of the 30,000 Couples Blessing, but it didn’t work out. I received several more Blessings which also didn’t work out. Finally, Bishop Ki Hoon Kim matched me to Mari Shiozaki who used to be a missionary from Paraguay. We were Blessed on February 13, 2000 in Seoul, Korea as part of the 400,000,000 Couples Blessing. Mari is indeed my second Messiah.

Truth be told, I wasn’t exactly an outstanding member. I was assigned different responsibilities during my years at the Sheridan Road Center. They included managing fundraising products (laser prints) with Simon Pang and fundraising in Florida, Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky. I helped with outreach activities through witnessing, lecturing, visiting churches and distributing fliers in cities where True Father, True Mother, and True Children were scheduled to speak. I was an assistant bus captain with Rev. Spicer and Kathleen Sometani during the JFK Stadium Blessing event. At the Center, I helped manage the kitchen and catering for church banquets during the 1990’s.

Seonghwa Service

Heng Kiat’s Seunghwa will be held on Saturday, May 19 at the Morizzo Funeral Home, 2550 Hassell Rd., Hoffman Estates, IL 60169. A viewing will begin at 10:00 AM and the Service will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by a time for fellowship.
