Denmark Education Minister Promotes Spiritual Rearmament
2025-09-09 · Source: tparents.org
“It’s good to reinforce militarily, but if there’s no equivalent spiritual rearmament, we will not guarantee the sovereignty and security of Denmark, the West, and Europe,” the education minister told the Weekendavisen weekly.
“To be spiritual or not to be” could be the new question in Hamlet’s nation, where Kierkegaard, the father of existentialism was born.
This surprising statement is surprising and, hopefully … prophetic. Though Danes are not very explicit about what they mean by this expression, they seem to be aware that a strong and vibrant nation is not just a prosperous nation. Denmark has a very high human development index (number 5 in the world), but they want to add the spirit into it.
Denmark is bullied both by Russia in the Baltic Sea, and by the threat of the US administration to annex Greenland. Their reaction to military threats from foes and traditional allies is to say, “let us arm ourselves spiritually first”.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s party has created a post to promote “spiritual rearmament” and national values, the lawmaker who got the job said on Tuesday. In a country very attached to cohesion and currently pushing a hard line on migration, Frederiksen has taken up the concept of spiritual rearmament, although she has not exactly defined what it means. “I will be the spokeswoman for democracy for the Social Democrats, with a particular focus on spiritual rearmament,” Ida Au ken wrote on Facebook. “We need to strengthen Danish democracy … We have to know our history. We need to speak about our values,” she added. The term “spiritual rearmament” appeared at the start of the year, when Danish Social Democrat Mattias Tesfaye began talking about it. “It’s good to reinforce militarily, but if there’s no equivalent spiritual rearmament, we will not guarantee the sovereignty and security of Denmark, the West, and Europe,” the education minister told the Weekendavisen weekly. Auken said “spiritual rearmament exists through many of our institutions that we tend to take for granted and that are under enormous pressure”. “These include state schools, the Lutheran church, the state and the voluntary sector,” she told local news agency Ritzau.
