On June 23, Family Federation USA published a press release about the conclusion of a court case brought against True Mother, Family Federation International, and some former and current church leaders by Hyung Jin (Sean) Moon in which he claimed that he was the appointed leader of the worldwide church. The U.S. Supreme Court’s order of June 14, 2021, is the final victory for True Mother in this matter, protecting God’s providence from Sean Moon’s attempts to take leadership of Family Federation through the U.S. court system. Q: What happens next? A: Sean Moon has no further way to claim leadership of the Unification movement through the U.S. courts. Following True Mother’s guidance, we should focus on how we can positively impact our communities by sharing the message of the Marriage Blessing and continue to actively work to bring reconciliation and unity to all levels of society.
Q: How can we say that we are about ‘peace and unification’ if we have this huge rift in our own movement? A: For those who feel concerned about this rift in the movement, we encourage you to continue to love and serve your brothers and sisters who have joined Sanctuary Church. It is not through logic alone that you can change the beliefs of people, but through winning their hearts, as is the standard by which True Parents have taught us.
Q: Does this mean Sean Moon and Sanctuary Church can’t use the Tongil Symbol (church logo) anymore? A: The Supreme Court’s decision is strictly in regards to Sean Moon’s assertion of being the leader of the church worldwide. Sanctuary Church’s unauthorized use of the Tongil Symbol is an ongoing legal case in the U.S. court system.
Q: Why does the media keep saying Sanctuary Church is the ‘new Moonies’ then? How do I explain the difference between us and Sanctuary? A: If you see this misrepresentation in a news article or broadcast, please let the Communications Department know at press@familyfed.org, but also feel free to contact the editor of that publication to request a correction. You may let them know that the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification stands for the values of peace, marriage and reconciliation, and we do not use, and have never used, weapons as a part of our faith practice.

NEW YORK, June 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Family Federation for World Peace and Uni cation USA, commonly referred to as the ‘Uni cation Church’, is grateful that Hyung Jin Sean Moon’s misguided efforts to use litigation to make himself leader of Family Federation for World Peace and Uni cation International have come to an end.
On June 14, 2021, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision denying the Petition for Certiorari submitted by Hyung Jin (Sean) Moon. In this petition, Sean Moon argued once again that he had been appointed by the late Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon as the leader of Family Federation for World Peace and Uni cation International. Monday’s order by the U.S. Supreme Court brings nality to the dismissal of Sean Moon’s claims to take leadership of Family Federation for World Peace and Uni cation through the U.S. court system.
On February 22, 2019, Hyung Jin (Sean) Moon led a lawsuit in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York against Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the Holy Spirit Association for the Uni cation of World Christianity (aka Family Federation for World Peace and Uni cation USA), and the Family Federation for World Peace and Uni cation International (both commonly referred to as the Uni cation Church), and additional individual defendants. This claim was dismissed in its entirety by Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald of the United States District Court on December 19, 2019. The dismissal was then unanimously af rmed by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on November 5, 2020.
We at Family Federation USA pray every day for Sean Moon and his followers that they will soon put their guns down and “beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks.” (Isaiah 2:4) As such, we will continue in our peaceful efforts to bring reconciliation and unity within all levels of society as envisioned by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and the late Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon.
