Contribute to the Tribute Museum to True Parents’ Lives and Work — Anne Inoue

I am writing from the planning department for CheonJi SunHakWon, the tribute museum to True Parents’ lives and work that we are working on here in the HyoJeong CheonWon community. True Mother has asked us to complete it by 2020. We are doing our best to make that possible.

We will be having the groundbreaking for the construction of the museum building on September 8 during the Seonghwa Festival, and by the time they finish the building, we should have everything gathered, designed and ready to install, so we are becoming more desperate to gather all the photos, documents, video files, data, and actual items that will enable us to tell the most complete, moving and inspiring story of True Parents lives, telling a story that will move the hearts of anyone who visits the museum, old members, young members, non-members, friends, family, complete strangers . . . everyone.

Mother has asked us to divide the display area in 13 zones, and we have been working on the preliminary plans for nearly two years. We still have a lot to do. It is very exciting and at the same time exhausting, because True Mother is expecting something wonderful (actually beyond wonderful--- maybe I should say magical, maybe I should say blessed, or heavenly) from us. And we are just ordinary people, and not experts at this kind of work (though, fortunately we do have some professional designers helping us).

We need to tell the grand, amazing and vibrant saga of True Parents’ mission and lives through hundreds of little stories, each of which will be supported by artifacts communicating a whiff of history, and photos, videos, texts and data. The stories need to be planned so that they support and add to each other and leave people overwhelmed with wonder and breathless with anticipation after they have taken the 3-4 hour (or 8-10 hour if they read all the fine print) journey through the exhibitions. And Mother has told us that when people get to the end of the tour, they should all be eager to join the church, join the effort, do whatever they can do to help build peace in the world, in their families, within themselves in the shortest possible time.

To tell a story with that kind of power requires many things. It requires that our team be united, with each other, with our central figure and with True Mother. It requires that we be ready to follow up on each inspiration and creative lead that we come up with, and determine whether it fits into the picture we are drawing or not. It requires that we be ever vigilant and ready to make any adjustments the True Mother asks of us as a result of inspirations that she receives. It requires that we make whatever investment of heart is necessary to keep the outside designers happy when there are changes in direction that require updating and redoing and improving. (Fortunately, they are kind of used to that because they are Korean, and it is a sort of “Korean” thing, in addition to being a phenomenon that accompanies work on the front line of God’s providence.)

AND, it requires help from you, and other members all around the world. I am sure there are things that you and other members in your area could send us that would help us to make our storytelling in the exhibition vibrant and moving. And I am equally sure that it might not be easy for you to think of what kind of things you might have that would be helpful to the project. Anything that can awaken people’s imagination to help them live through the stories of the providence in the 70s and 80s (and the 90s and the 50s and the 60s and the 21st century) could be useful.

We need tons and tons of other stuff, but I am starting my search by looking for copies of the Divine Principle, which is the very core of True Parents teachings and works, and the backbone of our life of faith. But if you have other things you would like to send, that is all right, too. By the time we finish, we will need thousands of items that can help us cement the focal points for the journey through time at the museum.

Our goal is to find four copies of each book if at all possible. One copy is for exhibit in the museum, and three copies will become part of the research library at the Sunhak Institute of History. The research library should be a place where scholars from all over the world can come to research True Parents’ teachings, True Parents’ life courses and the history of our movement. The Institute moved from Seoul up to the HyoJeong CheonWon community at CheongPyeong last summer, opening up new modern archive facilities for storing and cataloging the books and documents they receive. Much of what they have now is Korean materials, with a smaller collection in Japanese, and also a small collection in English and other languages. As one of the very few staff members who is fluent in English, I am assisting them in contacting international members to help build up the collection of books, documents, photos and other materials from all mission countries around the world. Our vision is that the library of itself will become a place that people will want to make pilgrimages to visit. One very exciting moment I had in the research library was in finding a copy of the Divine Principle in English, translated by Young Oon Kim in 1956, even before the first Korean version was publish (1957). It was fascinating to read through it and envision the truly daunting task of trying to find ways to express True Father’s new ideas in English.

I have done some research in the library and online, and have made a chart showing a genealogy of the editions of the Divine Principle that been published (or printed privately in small numbers). We still need copies of all of these. We do have one copy of some of them, but we are trying to make the research library have a complete collection with multiple copies as much as is possible (not only of the Divine Principles, but all the other publications the church has made in every language) so we need more copies of everything.

Well, not quite everything. In Korean and Japanese, we do have copies.

And we do have four copies of a few editions (but not all) in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai and Russian. Many thanks to the Thai and Russian churches for keeping us updated with your publications.

HERE As a first step, I would like to ask your help in assembling a comprehensive collection of Divine Principle books in all languages and editions for the Sunhak Institute of History research library and the CheonJi SunHakWon museum. There are two ways you can help.

1. Look at the file I have attached, see if you know if you know about any languages or editions of the Divine Principles or other books that are missing from the chart. If you notice anything that is missing, let me know at sunhak.contents@gmail.com, or +82-10-4193-1730

2. Send to me here in Korea, by post, or with somebody who is coming for the Seonghwa Festival in September, or bring yourself, any copies of the Divine Principle in any editions and languages that you can spare to donate to the library and museum. This might include copies in other languages that were left behind by brothers and sisters from other countries….

We are looking for copies of the older editions, the translations made in the 1970s based on Young Oon Kim’s early English translations (the red book—and her earlier ones), and study guides based on Young Hwi Kim’s Japanese and English study guides (Japanese from 1965 and English made in 1973 and 1975). We are also looking for the more recent versions, the translations based on the 1963 English Divine Principle (the black book / brown book), those based on the 1983 Outline of the Principle, Level 4 (the green book), and those based on the 1996 Exposition of the Principle. We also need copies of the English books.

We can use brand-new copies, or well-loved and well-used copies. Or even copies that got soaked in the rain when you were out pioneering or fundraising—but hopefully they would still be readable.

And if you want to send other church books or magazines, we need those too. But the first focus is the Divine Principle

Here are some details on what to do:

A. How to get the books to the Exhibition Planning Department 1. Send them by post to:

3. Send an electronic copy of a book or magazine

If you have only one copy of a book or magazine, and you need to keep it, you could donate a good-quality scan of the book, along with photographs.

Here are some guidelines for book and magazine scanning:  Scan every page, except for blank pages.  Start with the front cover and go all the way to the back cover  Covers should be color scans.  If there are no color illustrations, the inside pages can be greyscale scans  Use a scan quality of at least 300 dpi  Scan each page separately, not two pages on one scan.  Hold the book firmly against the scan plate so there is a minimum amount of shadow at the side of the page near the binding.  If your scanner includes a cropping function, crop the shadow portion off from the side of each page, but keep some margin so that the text is not too close to the edge of the image.  Use an automatic straighten setting on the scanner and/or make sure the book is set very squarely on the scan plate. It takes more time this way  Send the book in one PDF file (If you are dealing with an older computer or scanner which makes this impossible, it is also all right to send the book in several PDF Files, or in jpg files. We can re-edit them here in to one PDF file per book or magazine.  Send a few clear, high resolution photos of the exterior of the book – showing the front and back covers and the spine.

4. Loan us your book so we can scan it and return it to you

I/we have a lot of experience in book scanning, so another option is to loan us your Divine Principle or other books, and I or one of my colleagues will scan it and return it to you.

B. Certificate of Donation You can donate the items in your personal name, in the name of your national or local church, or in the name of somebody else whom you would like to give a chance to be recorded in history as a supporter of this very precious work.

We will prepare a certificate of donation for each book, item or group of items that is donated, and we will also make sure the information is secured to be included on the list of supporters for the library and museum. To make the certificate and update the support list, we need the following information:

1. Name of the person or organization that is making the donation 2. Country / region where that person / organization is from 3. Simple list of what items are being donated.

If I have all of this information before the items arrive, we can prepare the certificate ahead of time. If not, we will prepare it as soon as we receive the items, so that we can make sure you have it to take back home with you.

C. Other benefits for donors

 Access to digital library Access to the collection of digital publications that I have collected so far which are cleared for distribution. The collection will eventually be accessible through our website, but until that time, I will provide private donors with special access to the files.

 Name on supporter lists at the library and museum. It has not yet been decided which names will be noted on the wall of the museum and

which will be in the public digital record, but all donors will be recorded and included in the supporters list.

 Private travel assistance when you visit HyoJeong CheonWon (CheongPyeong) I have been here in Korea for 28 years now. I can help you with travel information if/when you come to Korea. This would include things like the airport bus and train schedules, information on accommodations outside the training center, Korea tourist information – church pilgrimage sites and other cultural sites, assistance in calling taxis for local transportation, arranging for a local member English speaking member as a guide who can help you (for a small fee) get around – to Seoul, for shopping, to tourist or pilgrimage sites, to visit a doctor, stuff like that. Keep in mind that when there are thousands of people coming at once, for example for Foundation Day, the Seonghwa Festival, or Great Works, I may not be able to handle everything quickly. So if you are coming when everyone else is, contact me as much in advance as possible.
