Hansik is a traditional Korean holiday, which happens 105 days after Dongji (Winter Solstice) and is one of the four major festive holidays in Korea. It is named after an ancient custom of not lighting fires and eating cold food.
The holiday has its origins in ancient China, where it was established to remember the death of a loyal subject named Gaechachu. On this day, people hold memorial services and visit ancestral graves, with various customs including laying fresh turf and planting trees.
