2020 Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate Announcement and Laureate Achievements
2019-10-05 · Source: tparents.org
World peace can only be achieved when all people live together in harmony, guided by principles of interdependence, mutual prosperity and universal values. Unfortunately, the world we live in does not manifest this ideal. In international relations, the principle of “national self-interest” takes precedent over norms of dialogue and cooperation. In order to achieve peace, we must work to overcome the barriers that divide us. We must learn to see each other as members of one human family. Living in a global era, we must all strive for mutual prosperity and lasting world peace.
The Sunhak Peace Prize was established to contribute to a peaceful future for all humanity, which is the vision of its founders, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon.
The year 2020 is a very significant year for the Sunhak Peace Prize. Not only does it represent the 4th award ceremony; it is the centenary year of the founders. For this reason, in addition to the 2020 peace prize, there will also be a special Founder’s Award that will be presented to commemorate the 100 th anniversary of the birth of the founder, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon.
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the founder’s birth, the Sunhak Peace Prize committee carefully reviewed the achievements of many candidates, based on the principles of peaceful interdependence, mutual prosperity and universally shared values. Interdependence, mutual prosperity and universally shared values serve as the standard for a prosperous and peaceful global community.
After careful review, it was decided that the Founders’ Award will be presented to former U.N. Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea. And the 2020 Sunhak Peace Prize Award will be presented to two worthy individuals: H.E. Macky Sall, current president of Senegal, and Bishop Dr. Munib Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Palestine.
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the winner of the Founders’ Award was the first Korean to become the U.N. Secretary-General in 2006. He served two successful terms, and contributed greatly to peace and human development. While in office, Secretary-General Ban led the United Nations with unyielding dedication, in the face of unprecedented global challenges and crises, including the global economic crisis, climate change, terrorism and refugee issues.
In particular, former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has pressed for international awareness of the seriousness of climate change which resulted in the Paris Agreement, a landmark accomplishment for humanity and the entire planet. In addition, during his term, the UN adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also contributed greatly to presenting and implementing a global strategy for promoting gender equality and child health. The Sunhak Committee wishes to pay tribute to former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for his great contributions to world peace, and for his efforts to overcome numerous and critical challenges facing humanity.
Senegalese President Macky Sall, laureate of the 2020 Sunhak Peace Prize, is a leader who exemplifies good governance. Elected Senegalese President in 2012, and again in 2019, President Macky Sall has consistently upheld the rule of law and human rights, while working to eradicate poverty and to promote economic development, making Senegal one of the most stable countries on the continent.
As an advocate for democratic values, President Macky Sall is leading Senegal effectively, creating a stable democracy. Among other things, he has rejected the temptation to extend his rule by implementing reforms,
such as shortening the presidential term from seven to five years. Thanks to President Sall’s fervent endorsement of the ‘Plan Senegal Emergent’ (PSE), his administration has greatly contributed to not only the prosperity of Senegal but also to West Africa’s economic development, giving great hope for the whole of Africa. In addition, by holding events such as the International Conference on Islam and Peace or the Africa Summit, President Macky Sall has played an important role as a bridge to peace, promoting dialogue as a means to resolving conflicts in Africa.
Our committee praised Senegal’s achievement, for overcoming adversity and achieving a stable and flourishing democracy along with economic growth in a relatively short period of time. Senegal’s experience serves as a good role model for neighboring countries that are also on the path of democratization and development.
In addition, the committee has selected Bishop Dr. Munib Younan as a 2020 laureate. Bishop Younan believes that interreligious dialogue and reconciliation are fundamental to peace for humanity. He has devoted his entire life to promoting religious harmony. Born in Jerusalem in 1950, Bishop Younan has been promoting harmony between religions for more than 40 years, since he was ordained as a Lutheran priest in 1976. In particular, from 2010 to 2017, he served as chairman of the Lutheran World Federation, which represents over 70 million Christians. He established a wide network of religious leaders from diverse faiths, and has made continuous efforts for harmony among religions. Most of all, Bishop Younan has promoted interreligious dialogue to bring peace to Jerusalem. He has promoted dialogue and reconciliation among Jews, Christians and Muslims in Jerusalem, a city that has been a center of conflict for centuries.
Furthermore, through continued dialogue with the Catholic Church, Bishop Younan was able to overcome differences and build mutual trust between the Catholic and the Protestant churches, demonstrating the beautiful harmony that is possible between believers of different faiths. Pope Francis even attended the Lutheran church’s 500th anniversary celebration of the religious reformation in 2017, declaring the “common path” which united Catholicism and Lutheranism. This was the fruit of his tireless efforts. The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee applauds his great contributions and achievements, and is very proud to present the award to Bishop Younan.
The crises facing the world today are problems that no single individual or even a few great powers can solve on their own. However, when we combine the actions of each and every one of us, working to help our neighbors in need, to care for nature, to make effort to understand the other person, we will be able to change the world little by little, moving in the direction of peace.
The biggest factor in conflict is when two parties have a heart of antagonism towards each other. As the founders, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, have always said, “In order to transcend religious, national and racial barriers, we must move away from self-centeredness and exclusivism by cultivating a harmonious mind and by promoting earnest encounters between peoples.”
Today’s award recipients are all peacemakers who also embody this kind of mindset. Moreover, they have applied this mindset, putting it into practice and solving conflicts. If we all associate the fate of the world with our own destiny, and if we unite and cooperate across borders, races, ideologies and religions, the world will be able to move one step closer towards one prosperous peaceful community.

■ Achievements
Implemented good governance with prudent reforms, including reducing the presidential term from seven
years to five years
Macky Sall, who took office as Senegal’s fourth president in April 2012, is leading good governance in Africa
with drastic reforms, including reducing his term, which was set for seven years, to five years u nder the current
constitution. Shortening the presidential term is a highly unconventional policy in Africa, where long-term rule is
rampant. However, Senegal implemented a comprehensive referendum on presidential terms and state affairs on
March 20, 2016, with the reform bill passing by a 63 percent supporting vote.
In order to modernize and stabilize democracy in Senegal, President Sall has enforced the Thirteen Reform
Measures aimed at strengthening the rule of law and improving the governance structure of public affairs, and has
led the fight against corruption by establishing the National Anti-Corruption and Civil Affairs Agency and the
National Commission for the Acquisition of Illegal Assets and Restoration of Unrighteous Gains. His firm will
and pra ctice towards good governance is leading West Africa to stabilize democracy.
Contributed to the economic revival of West Africa by expanding transportation infrastructure
With the aim of stabilizing people’s livelihoods and reviving the economy to be a t op priority in national
management, President Macky Sall pushed for the “Plan Senegal Emergent (PSE)” (first phase: 2014-18 and
second phase: 2019-23) to stabilize Senegal’s economic growth rate at around 6 percent. In addition, other various
policies being pursued by President Sall, includes raising retirement pensions, providing emergency subsidies to
farmers, holding various education-related national conferences, as well as revolutionizing the medical insurance
in the West African economy.
President Sa ll is also chairman of the National and Government Leaders Orientation Committee of the African
Union’s Development Organization (NEPAD), which has greatly improved the transportation infrastructure in
Africa by building roads, bridges, highways, production tracks, TERs (local express trains), as well as the Air
Seagen SA airlines and Sénégambie bridges.
Expedition of harmony on the African continent
Emphasizing “dialogue” as a means of resolving continental disputes, President Macky Sall is actively promoting
international conferences such as the “Islam and Peace International Conference,” the “UPF African Summit” and
the “International Conference on the Emergence of Africa” to promote harmony among African leaders. More
than 500 religious leaders and scholars attended the 2015 International Conference on “Islam and Peace” in Dakar
to discuss the topic of peace building. In addition, 1,200 political figures and religious leaders from more than 60
countries, attended the 2018 African Summit in Dakar to discuss about Africa’s peaceful future.

■ Achievements
Expedition of the harmony of Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the Middle East for 40 years
Bishop Munib Younan stressed to the world that a religion’s role is to serve all humans, regardless of sex, race,
ethnicity, religion and political factions. In addition, as he traveled around the world, he spread the message of
“to achieve consensus in diversity, one must guard against religious extremism, accept the diversity of biblical
interpretations, and also accept different religious traditions”. 7
Born in 1950 as a Palestinian refugee in Jerusalem, Bishop Younan devoted his life to promoting dialogue among Jews, Christians and Muslims, and leading reconciliation. In particular, he served as president of the Fellowship of the Middle East Evangelical Churches f rom 2004 to 2010, serving as a founding member of a coalition movement organization for Palestine and Israel, taking the lead in resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict. In addition, he was the first to translate the Augsburg Confession (1530), a key doctrinal document of Lutheranism, into Arabic, contributing to the promotion of understanding between Christianity and Islam. He also published a number of books containing messages for religious harmony.
Conflict reconciliation between the Catholic and Protestant Churches Bishop Younan has talked continuously with the Catholic church for decades to overcome the deep -rooted conflict between the two churches. As a result, in 2013, the Lutheran World Federat ion and the Vatican jointly adopted a document called “From Conflict to Sacrifice,” unraveling the 500 -year-old conflict. This came to be known as a historical reconciliation between the churches where both sides promised to “renew their commitment to theological dialogue and continue the journey towards unity, guided by God’s spirit according to the will of Lord Jesus Christ.” This was done with the aim to unite the two churches, accepting that the Lutheran Church and the Catholic Church are from the same roots so they must work towards reconciliation. Therefore, in 2016 Lutheranism and Catholicism together celebrated the 500th anniversary of religious reformation, and Bishop Younan and Pope Francis signed a declaration to go towards a “common path. “ It wa s the first time in history that the pope took part in the founding anniversary of Lutheran Church, with both sides stating, “Theological distinction entails prejudice and conflict, degenerates into a tool for political purposes,” and that they “reject all past and present hatred and violence expressed in the name of religion,” sending a strong message of religious harmony around the world.

Successful implementatio n of global action for the on climate change through the Paris Agreement
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon played a pivotal role in concluding the Paris Agreement, a global
measure against climate change. The Paris Agreement on climate change adapted in 2015 is a revolutionary
climate agreement in which 197 countries join in curbing greenhouse gas emissions within this century, with a
comprehensive long-term goal of eliminating man-made greenhouse gas production.
Ban displayed remarkable leadership behind-the-scenes, covering the distance from the North to the South Pole,
traveling all over the world, urging world leaders to make the decision to successfully implement the historical
climate agreement where all countries regardless of rich or poor can join the fight against climate change.
Furthermore, Ban succeeded in lobbying 55 countries for the agreement to take effect in less than a year. His
efforts led Foreign Policy, a prominent American news publication which focuses on global affairs, to select Ban
as one of the ‘100 Leading Global Thinkers of 2016.
Presentation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the master plan for the future mutual prosperity of humankind
In the 70 th Regular Session of the UN General Assembly, Former UN Secretary -General Ban Ki-moon presented
and succeeded in unanimously adopting the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’, a master plan to realize mutual
prosperity of humankind by 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals, consisting of 17 areas for sustainable
development of the global community, is a comprehensive and global cooperation agenda for countries to alleviate
common threats to sustainable development such as polarization of the economy and society, social inequality,
and the destruction of the global environment, also including the UN’s typical tasks such as fighting poverty and
ending hunger. Ban drew as much participation and consensus as possible from the heads of state to adopt the
development agenda to create a world in which no one is left behind, breaking the distinction between developed
and developing countries.
Promotion of gender equality and human rights
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has made it an important task to advance the fundamental human
rights of mankind from the early days of his tenure, especially the promotion of women rights and gender equality.
In 2010, Ban launched the UN Women by integrating several committees related to women’s rights registered in
the UN. He also promoted women’s rights by launching initiatives and campaigns such as ‘UNiTE to End
Violence against Women’, ‘Stop Rape Now’, ‘Network of Men Leaders’, and ‘Special Representatives on Sexual
Violence in Conflict’.
