In Loving Memory of Nathaniel Hinkle (1996 - 2016)

Heaven was probably ready for Nathan last February when he nearly died in circumstances resulting from an unexpected brain chemistry imbalance. From that time on he made steady progress in a heroic effort to recover. This gave us the blessing of being able to share almost another year of love with him. However, early Friday morning after work, it seems there was a sudden relapse in his condition, and he unintentionally fell to his death from a very high cell tower. The outpouring of love and respect for Nathan since his passing has been overwhelming and awe-inspiring.

One constant throughout Nathan’s life was the Shehaqua Family Camp community and culture. Although 20 years old when he passed, Nathan attended the Family camp every year for 22 years! … this is not a typo. The shim jung network of friends from Shehaqua and his NGA experiences is a truly beautiful and hopeful thing to see.

Ever since he was young, Nathan has had an innocent passion for life and an ability to self-learn very complex things quickly, such as the advanced Rubik’s Cubes and creating micro magnet polyhedrons. He devoured books rapidly, and was passionate about developing his mind, health and spirituality. Especially in the latter years of his life, he strove to make Unification ideals a personal reality. He really enjoyed engaging others in deep questions, taking time for reflection, and modeling the Eckhart Tolle practice of mindfulness and being present. Anyone who observed him close his eyes as he slowly savored each bite of a meal is prone to smile.

As Nathan was growing up he was exceptionally well adjusted. He easily endeared himself to his older siblings’ friends and seemed to thrive in the younger brother positions, rather than being intimidated by age differences. He was unusually free to talk to us as parents about anything he was going through; things most teenagers wouldn’t consider.

He also became an older brother to many, and had an inner peace and self-esteem that he enthusiastically conveyed to others. His mediums to do this were Parkour, beat boxing, dancing, and just being silly–not always the most refined arts but done with an intense freedom of spirit, even shock and awe, partly to

help others to get beyond their inhibitions and limitations. Nathan envisioned a world where everyone was free to be their true selves and express themselves fully, and lived his life accordingly.

His NextGen Academy experiences, especially in Africa, were a real catalyst to allow Nathan to discover an even more profound level of genuineness and his unique value.

Nathan is survived by his parents Geoffrey and Claire Hinkle, his Blessed sisters and their families: Leighton, Crescentia and Rose DeGoede, Victor and Laura Cordero, his brother Joseph Hinkle, and Grandfather Gerald Hinkle (93).

He will continue to love you all dearly, and make you smile from time to time.
