Clean water initiative to aid schoolgirls We at IRFF-UK are regularly inspired by the positive developments in the communities we are helping. One success story is the Busabala Primary School, located near Lake Victoria in Uganda, which has grown significantly in popularity. We have dedicated our efforts to improving education and health for the young children there, especially those drawn to the school from poor communities. The attendance rate has doubled to 1,000 schoolchildren, mostly girls.
Challenges Faced by Schoolgirls As the school has become more popular, the infrastructure can no longer support the growing number of students, particularly regarding access to clean drinking water.
One of the major challenges facing the community at the lake is the lack of clean, safe water, which has led to various issues affecting the children, especially girls. Young girls, in particular, have to trek long distances to fetch water, often encountering danger, including harassment and even rape at the water points.
IRFF-UK has raised much of the funding necessary to help construct a drinking water well on the school grounds, which will provide clean water to both the school and the surrounding local community.
“Improving the existing water purification system was explored, but the consistent and fixed cost of national water bills makes this solution unsustainable. Moreover, the unstable supply of water, especially during the dry season, exacerbates the problem.” Jesca Nakamanyisa, head teacher of nearby Destiny School, IRFF-UK’s flagship project in Uganda.
“By having a deep water well, Busabala Primary School can sustainably address its water needs, free of the recurring costs and supply instability associated with the national water system.”
“Implementing a deep water well has been identified as the best long-term solution for the water crisis at the school. This successful approach has previously been implemented at Destiny Junior School, where the deep water well has been operational for 11 years, ensuring a stable supply of clean water.”
Benefits of the New Water Well Not only will this project improve the school’s facilities and significantly reduce the risk of assaults on girls who currently travel far to fetch water. The school children, teachers, and the surrounding community will all benefit from the new well, particularly during dry spells when water scarcity is most acute. The total cost of constructing the well is £4,400. While we’ve already secured much of the funding, we still have a shortfall of around £1,200.
Standing the test of time If you’d like to help us bring clean water to Busabala School and the local community, any support that you offer would be deeply appreciated. The results will be visible and impactful for the children and families in Busabala and the project will stand the test of time. Thank you.
