yellow containers on the grounds of

Walmer Primary School, Port Elizabeth,

South Africa.

SHINE’s work of supporting Grade 3 learners is essential as

it immerses students aged 8-9 years old in books and reading,

with comprehension in English. Further education in South

Africa is impossible without English.

They’ve taught 60 such children in 2022.

You may be unaware that in South Africa 8 out of 10 Grade 4,

9-10-year-olds are unable to read for meaning. However, they

are taught in English while many children have never heard

English before. Hence the importance of SHINE’s work.

Unfortunately, over the past few years, the containers SHINE

works from have been vandalised, as they have no protective

wall to keep them and the children safe.

But thanks to IRFF-UK that’s all changed!

New Fence Installed to Protect SHINE

We are happy to report that a new fence has been installed around

SHINE’s teaching centre, which will help protect the school from

vandalism and other damage.

IRFF-UK funded the £5,690 fence and it was specially designed to

prevent climbing and other forms of intrusion by local youth.

Words Direct from SHINE: Updates on Learners

“Although SHINE has had its challenges, thanks to your support we have

made significant progress.

Our volunteers worked hard to create

personal CD suncatchers for each learner, a

visible daily reminder of our faith and

support in their academic potential.

We included certificates, readers, card and

dice games and some sweet treats in their gift

Results from Previous IRFF-UK Support

“Your generous sponsorship enabled us to make much-needed repairs

at our container centre.

Over the past few years, the electric connections had been vandalized,

the windows cracked and broken, and leaks caused by rust had allowed

rodents to enter through holes in the ceiling and floor.

Fortunately, with the help of a dedicated work team, we were able to

make welding repairs, install newly-made window frames and

shatterproof glass, and lay underground electric cable connections.

As a result, our centre is now safe and secure, and ready for a bright

Charity Venue for Learners

“The Teaching Centre serves as a charity venue for learners needing

stationery, academic resources, uniform items, medical assistance,

emotional support, and friendship.

During daily breaks we play

board and dice games, logic and

word puzzles, colouring-in and

number activity worksheets with

the junior learners.

We always look out for donations

of classroom displays, library

books, and teaching materials to

enhance our learners’

At IRFF-UK, we know the vital importance of education from a

young age and we are proud to be helping the 60 children in

the SHINE programme have a brighter future.

We look forward to continuing our work in helping these

children achieve their full potential. The more funding IRFF-

UK receives, the more we can pass on to the dedicated SHINE

team in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, South Africa to increase the

incredible results they are achieving.

We thank you for your continued support and encourage you

to share our message with others who may be interested in

helping us make a difference.

We launched our brand new website at the beginning of the month!

We are still ironing out the details but keep an eye out for new content, photos and news.
