Launching Period Poverty Aid In February this year, IRFF UK launched three Period Poverty Aid projects
across Africa with additional projects underway.
South Africa
Walmer Park Primary School students come from hugely disadvantaged
backgrounds, where necessities like sanitary towels are unaffordable, so
they are forced to make do with toilet paper or old rags.
Jessica Bredenkamp (a qualified nursing sister and owner of Growing Hearts), Gail Charalambous (IRFF UK
liaison) and Glenda Brunette launching the Sanitary Towel Project at Walmer Park Primary School.
The ladies spoke about the importance of sanitary towels and personal
hygiene which led to further discussions about issues such as teenage
pregnancies, rape, gender-based violence, and more.
Nearly 700 packs of Destiny Everyday Pads were purchased in aid of the
girls attending Walmer Park Primary School.
Social worker Sarah Fina (right), a good and empathetic listener, sets clear boundaries and is loved and
respected by all.
Jesca Nakamayisa has been organising visits and setting up ‘Girl Child Clubs’
in schools; Destiny Junior School, Busambala Primary School, Bright Land High
School Namagoma, and African Secondary School Kibiri.
Jesca Nakamayisa Destiny Junior School Headteacher and IRFF UK liaison.
During these visits, seminars and workshops were held for teachers and student leaders on personal hygiene, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention, and care.
There are plans in place to teach trainers and promote Girl Child empowerment programmes like the making of reusable pads and learning of crafts to make income.
In Ghana, Vivian Nkasia has started projects where she is making and
distributing reusable pads and providing menstrual health educational
activities to young people in a number of communities north of Accra.
Supported by IRFF UK, Vivian Nkasia offers purity
education guiding young people to avoid catching
HIV and AIDS.
Funded by IRFF UK, each reusable
pad costs about £1 to make. Each
girl will need around 5-6 pads for
day and night use, allowing for
washing in between.
