Dear Partners, Colleagues and Friends, It is with gratitude and pride that we reflect on the success of the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This year’s session, marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, reaffirmed the global commitment to advancing women’s rights and addressing barriers to achieving a world of sustainable peace, even amidst the challenges of escalating conflicts, climate change, and economic disparity. The adoption of the Political Declaration was a hopeful reminder that progress is possible when we stand together with courage and determination.

WFWPI opened Women’s Month with a beautiful concert “Women Defying Gravity” on March 1, 2025, at Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center in New York City. The event was co-hosted by WICCAFE, and Women and Media featuring the mesmerizing performances of balladeer Thomas John Castanares and classical pianist Hyowon Barlaan. The concert paid tribute to the strength and resilience of women represented by the four women leaders who were honored as WFWPI’s Global Women Peace Ambassadors. Over 90 guests joined to celebrate the heart-touching power of art and music to inspire positive change.

The WFWPI Advocacy Training from March 8-9 at the New Yorker Hotel was another milestone. With 60 CSW69 delegates from 17 countries, the training empowered women with the knowledge and tools to align local initiatives with the SDG’s and the Beijing Platform for Action’s 12 Critical Areas of Concern. The mock UN session gave delegates the chance to sharpen their advocacy skills and become more impactful in their local communities.

A highlight was our collaboration with the Philippine Mission to the UN for the Side Event on Women Peace and Security titled, “Turning Promises into Progress: Operationalizing the Pasay Declaration” on March 17. We are grateful to the Philippine government and the governments of El Salvador, Namibia and Slovenia for opening doors for dialogue and cooperation where women’s role in peacebuilding is prioritized. WFWPI delivered an intervention introducing WFWPI’s advocacy on “peace through forgiveness and healing” as fundamental steps towards a peaceful future. The importance of grassroots initiatives such as the Bridge of Peace project and the Young Global Women Peace Ambassadors Leadership Program was emphasized as best practices in achieving sustainable peace.

Other significant sessions included Parallel Events organized by WFWP Korea, Japan, and Taiwan chapters as well as WFWPI UN Office in Geneva - on education, technology, peace at the Korean DMZ, a hopeful meeting with Smt. Smriti Irani, Chair of Global Alliance for Gender Equality and Equity, and India’s former Cabinet Minister to explore future partnerships; and a heartwarming fundraiser by WFWP Japan for Rwanda’s Hope Technical Institute. This year WFWPI provided experiences, a platform and skills for our advocates to be more productive and impactful contributors to local and national governments.

At CSW69, women around the world celebrated important milestones as we take another big leap towards a new era where women and girls take their hard-earned share place in building a sustainable world of peace - in partnership with men.

With deepest gratitude for your inspiring partnership and support,

Carolyn Handschin Merly Barlaan Director, WFWPI Offices for UN Relations Director, WFWPI Office for UN Relations-New York
