Yuka TAKAHASHI, WFWP President- Cambodia, She is of Japanese nationality, Bachelor of Science, with major in psychology; She has also gained a counsellor qualification (private). Mrs. Takahashi lives in Cambodia for 10 years and is married to a Cambodian. From the very beginning she’s been working for non-profit organizations helping improve health and educational standards locally. Currently she is conducting and further developing the “Healthy Family Program,” that is strengthening the role of parents and supporting youth in becoming more resilient towards influences that jeopardize their healthy development. We focus on 2 risk factors behind youth crimes:
1. Youth is influenced a lot from info from abroad. After the civil war, with a lot of help from abroad the nation has developed rapidly especially in recent years. Accordingly, more info also flooded in. 2. In poor communities, parents stay far from home for a long time to work. Meanwhile, many children start working to support their families before graduating from junior high. Based on such background, we presume, one of the factors that drives the youth to undesirable deeds can be that there are not enough opportunities for parent-child communication at home. Hence, we are advocating how the family originally should be, the role of fatherhood and motherhood, to protect the youth from crime and immorality. Our target groups have been parents, guardians, educators, and social leaders. These programs are conducted with the full support of the local government.
