IAYSP-Switzerland organized its first environmental international contest named “Give your Trash Another Life”, in the framework of “Pick up your Trash” project. The goal of the contest, co organized with UPF Switzerland, is to raise awareness about our habit of wasting unreasonably, which damages our environment greatly. Inspired by El Anatsui’s artworks, which are made out of trash, the contestants had to create a piece of art made out of used items, that they could find at home, or even on the ground outside.
The criteria for winning the eco-friendly prizes were the aesthetic, the meaning/message behind the artwork, and the originality/creativity. The contestants had until the 2nd of May 2021 to send the finished projects. In order to define the winners, IAYSP-Switzerland had the chance to receive the help of a jury, which was composed by four inspiring women and artists: M. Schölzl, M. Abadia Garcia, E. Aono and S. Reymond.
The winners of the contest was announced on the 20th of May. Kenichi Nicolas Komagata and his son Teo, got third place, with the man and his castle. The N. Komagata-Nguyen and M. Komagata were second place, with their tree made of cardboard. Finally, the first place was earned by C. Cabral and G. Kinkela, who made an artwork inspired by the hard work of garbage men and women.
