The third and last session of the virtual meetings on Women in the Middle East, will focus on the humanitarian work being done in the area. What does it take to do an efficient humanitarian work in the region, in every region of the world? Is it only funds, or is there more to it? Founders of NGOs, recipients of charities, and activists will share their experiences with us. Dr. Sakena Yacoobi is from Afghanistan, the founder and CEO of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL). Under her leadership, AIL provides education, health and train ing services to the underserved in Afghanistan. Sakena has also established private facilities in the country, four schools, a hospital and a radio station. While fundraising for her various charities she is raising awareness about Afghanistan in the USA and in the world. She is a respected expert and speaker, especially on the subjects of girls’ education, life in Afghanistan, health, youth leadership, refugees and women ‘s empowerment. She parti cularly enjoys engaging with youth at schools, inspiring them to be globally minded citizens.
Sakena has 6 honorary doctorates from US universities including Princeton University. She has been awarded with: 2017 Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate, 2016 Harold W. McGraw Prize in Education, 2015 WISE Prize for Education Laureate and 2013 Opus Prize. She is both a Kravis Prize and Gruber Prize awardee. Sakena is a Skoll Social Entrepreneur, Schwab Social Entrepreneur, Ashoka Fellow and was nominated as one of 1,000 women for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Dr Nadia A. Al Sakkaf (@nadiasakkaf) is a renowned independent Yemeni poli tician and researcher. She was the first woman appointed as Minister of Information and before that was Chief Editor of the country’s first English language newspaper, The Yemen Times. She co -fou nded and is co-director of Jusoor Media Co. a Yemeni media _.,.- organisation aiming at promoting professional and independent media. AI-Sakkaf is recipient of many international and local awards, such as the Business for Peace Award from the Business for Peace Foundation in Oslo, the Free Media Pioneers Award from the International Press Institute in Vienna, and she was the first recipient of Gebran Tueni Award for cou rageous and independent editors and publishers presented from the WAN- IFRA and Annahar Foundation. She was also recognised by the BBC as one of 100 Women who changed the world. She was also chosen by the World Economic Forum as one of 20 15 d istinguished Young Global Leaders.
AI-Sakkaf published extensively in the fields of politics, media, and development. She has many policy and research papers, book chapters, and has authored two books on Yemeni women’s empowerment. She also published a book collection on the experiences of Yemeni women as electoral candidates available in Arabic and English. Some of her work can be found in her research page and Linkedln profile. Her TED Talk Yemen through my eyes, is one of the most known videos on Yemen as it was translated to 34 languages and had over half a million views.
Ms. Tara Hermez is the co- founder and CEO of 3QA, a regional social enterprise that provides quality assurance solutions to third sector entities in the Middle East. Hermez has forged a solid backgro und in humanitarian and refugee support within the sectors of education, capacity building and monitoring and evaluation. She has worked extensively with both local and international NGOs active in the Middle East. Awarded the Chevening scholarship by the Foreign and Commonwealth Offi ce of the UK, Hermez graduated with a Masters in Public Administration and Management from the University College London. Prior to her Master’s degree, she worked for Oxfam in its regional office covering the Syria crisis response.
In parallel to her career, Hermez continues to invest her time in hands on social work. She supports Palestinian youth within the areas of conflict resolution and education, which includes assuming the role of a coordinator of th e national committee for the United World Colleges (UWC) - an organisation that provides scholarships fo r refugees to study abroad. She is also a dedicated volunteer at Blind with Vision, a group that supports visually impaired running enthusiasts by aiding them in training for marathons. Furthermore, Hermez ta kes initiative to mentor young women interested in pursuing a career in the third sector, offering guidance and support navigating this complex field.
Dr. Abdulrahman Al Ahrabi was born and raised in Yemen in a middle class fami ly. Happily, education was at the top of his family’s priorities. He was very interested in excelling in his skills and always searching for the latest books and information. Finally, he qualified to j oin the Faculty of Engineering at Sana’a University in Yemen. After graduation, he worked in NGO-sponsored projects targeting rural women to empower them economically and socially. The success stories of these simple women made him take a new turn in his life. He headed to Malaysia, to pursue higher studies in artificial intelligence (virtual reali ty). Upon being awarded the Master’s degree from University Putra Malaysia, he went to Germany to realize his dream: learn from the best. Currently, he is learning the German language. He is very interested in learning new cultu res, discovering new things in life, and enlarging his perception. His hobbies are reading and swimming.
Ms. Haniyeh Faramarzi Student, 19 years old. She was born and raised in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in a multi-cu ltural Persian- Filipino family. She is studying “Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)” at the Tehran University. She has been teaching the English language since the age of 16 in various language academies . . --Ii ,:11 v.-:/,. I As a person who has been very open about being for women’s rights, she has faced both negative and positive reactions from the people around her. In her own words: “I a,n tired of seeing people, especially women, being mistreated and discriminated because ofoutdated beliefs and bigotry. By being a teacher I have a platform and an audience that I can influence and I truly hope I can use that to make even a very. small contribution and change the damaging thoughts that I see in some people.”
Ms. Sonja Read is a public health nutritionist focused on low- and middle-income countries. She has worked for several international NGOs delivering programmes and carrying out research on malnutrition in infants under 6 months. For the past two years her work has focused on Gaza, Palestine, where she is working as an independent consu ltant on mainly food security and economic empowerment projects. Her passion is to help organisations be more strategic to have a greater impact. She is originally from Finland.
Ms. Moriko Hori is President of Women’s Federati on for World Peace Japan since 2016 and Vice President and Director of International Service of WFWP International. From this position she is managing 110 humanitarian projects in 50 countries.
Moriko is born in Japan and a mother of two children. She has attended junior and high school in South Korea, then graduated from East Asian Studies, from Columbia University, USA. She also graduated from the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies in Waseda University, Tokyo where she finis hed a Ph.D. program, specializing in Japan-Korea History Education and Reconci liation Studies. She is a senior researcher of IPP (International Peace Policy)
Ms. Carolyn Handschin Moser is Vice - President of WFWPI for Europe (www.wfwp.org) and Vice President of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women at the UN in Geneva. As Director of the United Nations Offices for WFWPI, she led their advocacy team at the United Nations in Geneva for 20 years, focusing on peace, education and human rights through the empowerment of women and girls and protection of the fami ly. Her concern for youth led her to create the WFWPI -UN Internship program in Geneva in 2005, where she is still the Director. She has been engaged in the Women’s Conferences for Peace in the Middle East since 2002. She has seven children, three granddaughters and a supportive husband who are a resource and inspiration for her work.
Aya Almohtadi is fresh graduate who has double maj ored in Biological Studies and English Literature. Her peace advocacy journey started with training at the Model Arab League and the Model United Nations. She has worked with sundry organizations in Lebanon to assist destitute families and in-flowing refugees. Currently, she’s working with CMIC (Community Mobilization in Crisis) while teaching English to high school students.
Dr. Zoe Bennett, Director of WFWP Middle East, is native of Greece and has spent most of her adult life abroad. She studied Psychology and Oriental Languages in France. She then travelled extensively in Europe, the United States, South Korea and the Middle East. She spent 11 years with her family in Cyprus, where she privately taught ‘r ’ ,.· Greek and French to foreigners and oriental culture to those curious of the exotic Far East. The creation of WFWP in 1992 was a natural response to her passion of uplifting and empowering human beings of all cultures through service and education. She firmly believes that every human being has unique talents, useful to all, that can thrive in an environment of peace and justice.
