April 20, 2015 Dear __________, The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) and Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) extend a cordial invitation to you to attend a special event to be convened at the United Nations building in Vienna, Austria, on May 11, 2015 from 14:00 to 17:00 on the theme “The UN at 70: Toward a Resolution of Tensions on the Korean Peninsula”. The partner organizations include ACUNS Vienna, the Segye Times and Sun Mun University, South Korea. This special event is part of a wider series of conferences held by UPF-Europe and WFWP-Europe on topics of pressing concern for Europe and the world, held at such venues as the UN in Geneva and in Vienna, and in national parliaments around Europe. Alongside this year’s celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War 2, two other significant milestones to be marked will be the 70 years that have elapsed both since the founding of the United Nations, and since Korean independence. Despite all the challenges and difficulties the U.N. has faced in those years, it still manages to embody humankind’s hopes for a peaceful world. However, despite the fact that the Korean people, along with other Pacific nations, have risen to a position of great influence in the world, the Korean Peninsula remains divided by a conflict that still threatens peace in Northeast Asia and beyond. The Vienna conference is aimed at addressing issues related to the future of the United Nations and its impact on peace in Northeast Asia. It will draw on the European experience of peacebuilding over the past 70 years, and in particular, the experience of Austria, which this year celebrates 60 years of independence. Austria itself was, of course, only released from its 10-year occupation by the Allied Powers in 1955, when the latter agreed to sign the “State Treaty” only if Austria would promise to remain neutral, and it was this promise that enabled Vienna to be designated as the third UN seat in the world and the second such seat to be created in Europe. UPF and WFWP’s Co-Founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, who will be paying a visit to Europe at that time, will address participants on “the mission of the United Nations for securing peace in the world”. A panel of high level experts from both Europe and Korea will then address the above-mentioned issues and consider what enhanced role the United Nations could play in Northeast Asia. World-renowned for their role as cultural ambassadors of Korea and peace messengers, the Little Angels Children’s Folk Ballet will open the event with a cultural performance. We do hope that you will be able to attend. Registration for the event needs to be done online at the following link The UN at 70: Toward a Resolution of Tensions on the Korean Peninsula . Please notify of your wish to attend by contacting your local UPF or WFWP chapter. We look forward to hearing from you soon and to meeting you in person at this significant conference. .
