The 14th Annual WFWP Europe Conference: “Youth and the Future of Leadership: The Role of Parents and Family in Shaping Responsible Citizenship” November 20-22, 2014 (With a Special Event at the European Parliament at 10am on November 20) Lan Young Moon and Carolyn Handschin October 25, 2014
Dear colleagues and friends,
As has been our tradition since 2001, Women’s Federation for World Peace- Europe is preparing our annual women’s leadership conference- It will be held this year from November 20-22 in Brussels, Belgium. We would be delighted if you would join us.
2014 is the 20th anniversary of the inauguration of the International Year of the Family. All around the world, WFWPI has been organising conferences at United Nations and government venues, initiating local projects and activities to reinforce our resolve about the important contribution of families to peace and human development with an emphasis on the role of the mother. In Brussels, we would like to link that to the future of leadership and governance- and listen to voices of youth.
We will be collaborating with the World Youth Alliance and other Non Governmental Organisations to hold an event at the European Parliament on November 20. The theme for that panel discussion is “The Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Role of Family in Shaping Responsible Citizenship”.
The work of WFWPI In Europe is part of a global effort to promote women’s distinctive experience, perspective, skills, and competence in development, peace building, peace education- and very importantly, healing and prevention. Our vision for the future sees a transformation of the leadership paradigm in which feminine qualities of leadership become more predominant and so-called “positive masculinity” can emerge to provide the complementary component, a partnership that is best learned through the parental model in the family.
Women of all ages working together, bound by our heart of concern for their families and communities can be a very powerful force. We all would like to be more effective. The current dilemma in our European landscape seems to be that for many issues, including the importance of family, decision- makers too often try to impose their “politically correct” views, which do not reflect those of the population.
We would like to take this time to build our capacities for “soft power” diplomacy, skills of persuasion (advocacy) and networking so that we can influence the change in our communities and other circles that we would like to see. We are confident that there are many young (and less young) women who just need a little encouragement to take on positions of greater influence. We will be offering a series of mini- workshops in areas related to leadership skills, capacity- building in family advocacy, networking and other practical resources.
During this meeting, there will also be a tribute to the 20 year anniversary of the “WFWP Bridge of Peace Program”. There have been over one hundred events and activities held since 1994 that have contributed to ending cycles of enmity and conflict here in Europe through acts of reconciliation, healing and service. We’d like to invite you to the launching of the report and celebration.
We hope that you will be able to bring in your specific local or global expertise and best practices to broaden our program.
The cost, covering hotel, meals and conference facilities will be sent in a separate mail.
Very sincerely,
Dr. Lan Young Moon President Emeritus, WFWPI
Ms. Carolyn Handschin President WFWP- EU
