Women in Nepal participate in capacity building workshops hosted by Global Peace Foundation.

Global Peace Foundation ( GPF) NeP-al organized a series of activities through its Capacity-Building of Women project designed to empower women by equipping them with leadership values and essential skills. Recognizing the vital and transformative roles women play within their families and communities, the project focused on building their confidence and leadership skills, enhancing communication and f”’l”’lllnhl”’lrntil”’ln nhilitioc nnn n0H0lnninn nrn,-.ti,-.nl clrillc fl”’lr in,-.nmo

Under this project, two livelihood-focused training programs were conducted: Tailoring Training, which enabled women to acquire practical skills in domestic and commercial tailoring; and Pickle Making Training, which introduced participants to food preservation and marketing skills, promoting home-based production for economic self-reliance.

Launched on February 1, 2025, in Dhadingbesi, Nilkantha Municipality, the 3-month training equipped 21 women with both basic and advanced tailoring skills, including pattern making. Aside from the tailoring training, the women also received sessions on Self-Confidence, Effective Communication, Cervical Cancer Awareness, and Leadership Values. In addition to the 21 women enrolled in the tailoring training, five more women participated in these sessions.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Women display their tailored clothing pieces.

One of the trainees, Kopila Sitaula, shared, “Before taking part in this training, I used to stay at home and didn’t have any specific skills. I had no prior knowledge of tailoring, but through this training, I developed tailoring skills and, more importantly, gained self-confidence. Instead of just staying at home, I got the opportunity to learn something meaningful and practical. I now hope to share what I’ve learned with others in my community. In addition to tailoring, I also improved my communication skills, and I sincerely thank GPF Nepal for giving me this valuable opportunity.”

Some of the trainees have begun working as seamstresses in local boutique shops, while others continue to enhance their tailoring skills by sewing basic items and aspire to open their own tailoring businesses in the future.

Another training session on pickle making was held in Thulo Kharibot, Kathmandu, aimed at empowering women through practical training in preparing food alongside leadership development.

The training commenced on July 22, 2025, with a session titled “Self-Confidence for Women Entrepreneurs,” which focused on mental well-being, self-worth, and building an entrepreneurial mindset. Participants engaged in interactive exercises and group discussions that fostered confidence and readiness for business ventures.

A participant showcases her product from pickle-making training.

Over the following four days, participants received hands-on training in preparing seven varieties of pickles under the guidance of trainer Ms. Mira Kumari Bajgain. The women learned both the practical and theoretical aspects of pickle production, with an emphasis on hygiene, ingredient handling, storage techniques, and packaging. To help participants begin income-generating activities, they were also taught the basics of marketing, shelf-life management, and small-scale business strategies.

The women have demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and commitment to learning. Even on days when no formal training was scheduled, they took the initiative to gather independently, purchase their own ingredients, and practice making pickles at home. The following day, they proudly presented their homemade pickles to the trainer and requested feedback on the taste and quality. In another impressive display of ownership, the women collectively contributed their own money to buy 20kg of chicken for the last day of training. This level of motivation reflects their eagerness to apply what they’ve learned and take real steps toward self-reliance.

Moreover, on July 31, 2025, a leadership session was conducted for the same women enhancing their understanding of the role of women in leadership within families and communities, guided by the Global Peace Values Framework. Through interactive discussions and activities, the women explored how the values of living for the greater good, dreaming big, ownership, and teamwork can be applied in their everyday lives, families, and leadership.

Nepalese w ome n join a leadersh ip session hosted b y Global Pe a ce Foundation.

With increased confidence and a deeper understanding of the vital role women play in society, they are inspired to take on leadership roles with a service-oriented mindset. As an initial step, the women organized a cleaning drive at a local temple the following day. The collective effort not only helped in maintaining the hygiene of the place but also demonstrated service, teamwork, and ownership towards their community.

On the final day of the program, on August 7, 2025, the women were educated on Financial Literacy, facilitated by Mr. Kuber Niroula. Kuber focused on practical aspects of financial management, including saving habits, budgeting, and financial planning. The session strengthened women’s financial knowledge and enhanced their ability to make informed financial decisions.

Rupa Devi Barma, one of the trainees, expressed her gratitude to GPF Nepal for organizing the training. “I found this training to be both meaningful and practical. The sessions were designed in a way that allowed us to learn by doing. It gave me fresh ideas for income generation and economic independence, especially for women. Seeing participants confidently engage in group discussions, exploring their creativity, and even talking about starting small businesses inspired me. This training has created a great example of how skill-based workshops can uplift communities and promote self-reliance. I hope similar programs will be regularly conducted, especially at the community level, so that more women can benefit from impactful training like this one.”

Four participants have begun earning money by selling homemade pickles to neighbors and acquaintances, while others continue refining their skills by making pickles for family consumption and promoting their products through free distribution to gather feedback.

The project concluded with self-evaluations and certificate distribution, during which participants reported increased confidence, enhanced practical skills, and a sense of self. This initintiw::. nnt nnh, fn~h:::.ri::.rl inrli\lirl1 1nl nrn,Mth h1 1t nl~r, ~tri::.nnthi::.ni::.rl

The Global Peace Foundation ( GPF) Malaysia is committed to building resilient communities through collaboration, innovation, and long-term empowerment. In partnership with Nestle Malaysia, the “Safe Water, Safe Communities” program is bringing sustainable water solutions to Orang Asli (original peoples) villages, empowering families with reliable access to safe water and better hygiene practices. Since its inception in 2018, the program has benefited over 1,000 Orang Asli families across the country by providing key infrastructure such as water filtration systems, solar-powered pumps, gravity-fed water systems, and washrooms.

The recent completion of a new dam in Kampung Lumut marks another milestone in this journey of impact. Beyond infrastructure, the project fosters self-reliance by equipping villagers with the knowledge to operate and maintain the systems themselves. Restoring Dignity and Building Unity in Hayin Banki, Nigeria, through • Community Peace Forum and Interfaith Service • Pro1ect Wairimu Mwangi

November 18, 2025

Community-driven peacebuilding is a foundation of sustainable harmony. It recognizes that peace is not something imposed from outside but something cultivated within communities themselves. At the Global Peace Foundation ( GPF), our community-driven peacebuilding initiatives engage local stakeholders, citizens, faith leaders, traditional rulers, and youth to build trust, foster dialogue, and create opportunities for Abdul Ahmed. senhior oroaram manaaer of GPF

Nigeria, and Ahmadu Shettima, M&E officer of GPF cooperation around Nigeria, with the youngest member of the Jama’atu shared values and Nasril Islam First Aid Group identities. By doing so, we transform divisions into bonds of solidarity that last.

Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless words, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” capture the essence of this approach. It is not enough to wish for peace; people must embody it in their daily actions.

GPF has embraced this philosophy globally, demonstrating that shared service and values are powerful tools for reconciliation. From interfaith leadership programs in Asia, to youth-led service projects in Latin America, and community reconciliation forums in Africa, GPF has consistently empowered local people to take ownership of peace. In Nigeria, GPF has championed interfaith cooperation by bringing diverse groups together in joint service and dialogue, affirming the vision of “One Family under God.”

A vivid example of this approach came to life in Kaduna, Nigeria, on September 6, 2025, during the Community Peace Forum and Interfaith Service Project: Graveyard Restoration Initiative for Muslims and Christians in Hayin Banki. Organized by GPF Nigeria, the initiative brought together over 250 participants, including youth, women, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community groups for a day of dialogue, symbolic action, and service.

The event began with joint prayers offered by Christian and Muslim leaders, messages of goodwill, and speeches from dignitaries, followed by a unity parade featuring groups such as Hisba, Shabbatu Ahbabu, Jama’atu Nasril Islam First Aid, Boys Brigade, and Fitiyanul Islam. Together, these diverse groups modeled cooperation and mutual respect in public. The heart of the initiative was a joint sanitation exercise at the Christian and Muslim cemeteries. Side by side, participants cleared weeds and restored dignity to the resting places of their elders. In honoring their ancestors, they honored each other, showing that in death, as in life, they share a common humanity.

Abdul Ahmed, the senior program manager of GPF Nigeria, representing the Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the country director of GPF Nigeria declaring the Cemetery c leaning work open

For many, the day was historic. Reverand Bulus Edon reflected, “For the first time, Muslims and Christians have come together not just to talk about peace but to act it out. This would not have been possible without the support of the GPF Nigeria, whose vision of ‘One Family under God’ has inspired us.”

Youth leader Mallam Yusuf Tanko expressed pride in the initiative, noting, “It has shown us that unity is stronger than division. We will carry this spirit forward every year.” Representing the traditional leadership, Mallam Musa Galadima added, “The joint cleaning of our cemeteries shows respect for our elders who have passed away and strengthens the bond among us. We deeply appreciate the GPF Nigeria for always standing by our community.”

Participants during the c emetery work

The outcomes extended beyond the physical restoration of the cemeteries. The initiative created safe spaces for dialogue, built trust between Christians and Muslims, and inspired participants to commit to making the graveyard cleaning an annual tradition. It also provided a practical example of how interfaith leadership, family values, and a culture of service can be woven together to heal divisions.

The Hayin Banki initiative stands as a model for other communities in Kaduna North and beyond. It shows that peace is not only the absence of conflict but the active presence of respect, cooperation, and shared responsibility. Through initiatives like this, GPF continues to advance innovative, values-based peacebuilding, demonstrating that diversity is not a threat but a blessing, and that lasting peace is built when communities work hand in hand as one family under God.
