FFWPU USA: CARP USA's Campus Presence Increased By 29.4% This Year
2022-10-31 · Source: tparents.org
CARP’s 2021-2022 annual report is now available, and the results are impressive. Nationwide, CARP’s campus presence increased by 29.4 percent in just a year - a great achievement aligned with True Mother’s goal of engaging more young people to revive the faith of America.
“As we emerged from the pandemic this year, CARP is stronger than ever,” said Jinil Fleischman, CARP national president, in the report’s featured message. “Our student leadership has grown in number and in passion for CARP’s mission. We are so grateful for the vision set forth for CARP by our founders, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. They believed that young people must live for God and for the sake of others in order to create a peaceful world.”
New ideas and strategies have been implemented under Fleischman’s leadership, including introducing CARP and tapping new membership at campus fairs. With more chapters registered or in development on campuses - jumping from 34 to 44 - CARP’s values of faith, family, and peace are reaching more students than ever before.
“Education is necessary in order to save America and raise up second and third generations,” said True Mother during a trip to Las Vegas in April. “So with confidence, we need to show that we have the power so that people can follow heaven’s providence. One way or another, America must help the world providence by becoming a self-reliant America by increasing membership. It is our responsibility to educate and nurture the second generation so that they can contribute to the providence.”
The CARP report breaks down national and local efforts to establish more chapters, expand and enhance education programs and activities, and how these methods have led to membership growth. CARP now has a presence in 22 states across the country, with half of its chapters on West Coast campuses. Chapters consist of two and four-year colleges that are public and private, as well as CARP “hubs” that involve multiple chapters in a designated location, such as the Bay Area and DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia).
The report also showcases student involvement in CARP nationwide, with some 220 CARP leaders and more than 250 members. CARP leaders said powerful retreats, chapter visits, and national training and team calls have all aided the immense progress. Each CARP chapter, which hosts retreats that vary from one day to three weeks, features a Divine Principle study component. Throughout the 2021-22 academic year, there were more than 25 retreats held across the nation.
“I learned to look for God in new ways,” said one retreat participant from CARP DMV. “I see how I need to improve myself first before creating a family and practicing a loving relationship. From the trip, I feel like I know how to actually practice what I learned.”
Through conferences, social media, various campaigns, and more, CARP’s “campus impact events” have brought greater awareness to topics related to its core values. Programs and projects, like the launch of “The Tribe Talk” podcast series by CARP Las Vegas, have addressed common matters that students face, including self-worth and building healthy relationships. Community service projects have been instrumental to CARP’s public outreach as well, bringing its principles and vision to life.
“I wanted to gain a stronger sense of identity as national CARP, and I think I got exactly that,” said a CARP member from the East Coast, who participated in the 2022 national “Momentum” retreat held in late July. “It’s exciting to think we’re all together investing and fighting for the same goals across the country.”
CARP USA aims to have 1,200 chapters nationwide and 30,000 members by 2027. A delegation of 120 student leaders will also head to Korea by summer 2023.

A) NATIONAL National CARP hosts in-person and online programs to connect and support the local chapters. We also produce many resources to help the chapters grow in their local activities.
LOCAL DIRECTORS’ RETREAT
In April 2022, CARP local directors gathered at Estes Park, Colorado to get clear on CARP’s mission, vision, core values, and organizational structure. While this was happening, CARP’s partner organization Generation Peace Academy (GPA) simultaneously held a retreat in the same location. The majority of CARP’s local directors and GPA’s staff met together for the first time, making history for the two organizations.

WINTER MOMENTUM In the summer of 2021, National CARP had a powerful Momentum retreat. The hope for this national gathering was to bring clarity for the CARP leaders right before heading into the semester.
To bring that energy back, we hosted an online Winter Momentum retreat in the beginning of 2022. Students connected with other leaders throughout the states and shared their challenges and victories. They were also able to hear from Dr. Chung Sik Yong, Continental Director of CARP’s parental organization Family Federation USA, and Mr. Naokimi Ushiroda, President of Family Federation USA.

LOCAL CHAPTER SUPPORT
National CARP Calls Throughout the semesters, National CARP hosted a weekly call for all the chapter leaders. Each week varied from receiving guidance, hearing structural or organizational updates, sharing reports of local chapter activities, and more.
Chapter Visits Visiting local chapters have been key in supporting developing chapters more closely. Throughout the past year, National Chapter Support Coordinator C. K. visited six chapters in Washington, Utah, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and Minnesota.

LOCAL CHAPTER SUPPORT
Chapter Visits (cont.) President Jinil Fleischman also visited chapters this year in Chicago and Arizona.
Swag During Momentum 2021 and for the 2021-2022 school year, all chapters received the “Haebaragi” sunflower t-shirts, designed by CARP Administrator Takayoshi Sugawara.

B) LOCAL CARP thrives because of the local student initiatives. CARP’s key local activities — such as weekly meetings, one-on-one studies, retreats, and more — have grown organically from many years of local development.
CARP MEETINGS Many CARP chapters hold a weekly meeting to engage their new participants into CARP’s core teaching and culture. CARP Talks have been a signature of CARP, but many chapters have taken up their own names such as Delve, Ignite, Ohana Talks, Thrive, Tribe Talks, and many more. They are typically hosted on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Having experienced hosting online events throughout the pandemic, chapters were quick to adapt when COVID-19 cases spiked or when emergency situations arose. Online events have always been a way for people to meet beyond location.

DIVINE PRINCIPLE STUDY SESSIONS Students get to engage in CARP’s core teaching, the Divine Principle, through a more personal, study session. Topics cover many areas such as the purpose of life, the identity of God, the state of the world, the trajectory of human history, and many more. These sessions have been when many students had personal breakthroughs and realizations about their own life.
CARP 2021 - 2022 Report | © 2022 NCARP, Inc.
RETREATS Many chapters host retreats that can vary in length from one day to three weeks. The core of the retreats is to provide a space for participants to study the Divine Principle more deeply, and experience the culture that is created through its application. Experiencing these retreats have been pivotal for many of the participants to continue their involvement and growth with CARP.
“God can communicate with me through many ways, not just by directly speaking to me. I learned to look for God in new ways… I see how I need to improve myself first before creating a family and practicing a loving relationship. From the trip, I feel like I know how to actually practice what I learned.” - Rives Adam, sophomore at University of Maryland, CARP DMV
Throughout 2021 - 2022, there were over 25 retreats that were hosted across the nation. Some of them were co-hosted amongst chapters in their respective hub, or even beyond.

CAMPUS IMPACT EVENTS CARP aims to impact the society by bringing awareness to topics related to our core values. This is done through different means such as conferences, social media, campaigns, and many more. This past year, these campus impact events and efforts have mainly occurred throughout the spring of 2022.
March 15th, 2022 & May 5th, 2022: CARP Berkeley focused on the topic “For the Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula.” They held two events, one in March and another in May, to raise conversations on the benefits and necessity for the reunification of Korea through presentations by community and students leaders.

CAMPUS IMPACT EVENTS (cont.) Spring 2022: Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and Mother Moon’s emphasis on the unlimited potential of the internet, CARP Las Vegas launched the Tribe Talk podcast series. Similar to their weekly discussion event, they covered various topics such as isolation, self-worth, and building authentic relationships by inviting guest speakers.
April 26th, 2022: CARP Dallas held a campus seminar titled “Love 101: Intro to Lasting Relationships,” in collaboration with guest speaker Derrah Jackson from the Medical Institute for Sexual Health. His presentation demonstrated how optimal sexual health is produced when sex is kept in a committed marriage.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS Another way that CARP makes an impact is through service. Throughout the year, many chapters connected with their local organizations to find opportunities to serve their communities.
Nov. 22nd, 2021: CARP Westminster held a food bank fundraiser by collaborating with Ramen Mobile. Through their efforts, they raised $250 for the Utah Food Bank.
November 22, 2021: For Thanksgiving, CARP Bay Area worked together with many local churches and organizations to distribute boxes of food and Thanksgiving goods to families in the Oakland community.
February 26th, 2022: Later in February 2022, CARP Bay Area collaborated with Service for Peace and High Street Coalition to do a neighborhood trash cleanup and a garden beautification project.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING (ACTIONIZING / CENTER LIFE) A few hubs also held an “actionizing” program to conclude their semester. These programs intend to create a space for continued education where participants can make practical steps toward the core principles and teachings that they have gained from their retreat. This has been done through continued education, practice in presenting the Divine Principle, outreaching, implementing spiritual practices, and many more. This past spring 2022 semester, hubs in the Bay Area, DMV, and Las Vegas held their own actionizing programs.

MOMENTUM 2022 National CARP hosted their annual Momentum leadership retreat from July 25th to the 27th at Barrytown, New York. Momentum gathers CARP leaders from across the nation to connect to the national vision and with each other in preparation for the upcoming school year.
The retreat gathered leaders from at least 24 different states, 93 participants, and 16 CARP staff and local directors. A total of 109 participants and staff joined, making it the largest gathering for Momentum yet!
“I feel passionate about bringing the spirit and energy from CARP Momentum to my campus. The spirit here is so lively and beautiful and I would love to develop this kind of culture on my own campus.” - Tara McMahon, senior at Montclair University, CARP New Jersey
“I appreciate Momentum. I wanted to gain a stronger sense of identity as national CARP and I think I got exactly that. It’s exciting to think we’re all together investing and fighting for the same goals across the country.” - Toshio Barber, incoming freshmen at Montgomery College, CARP DMV

Dr. Chung Sik Yong, senior advisor to CARP and regional president of CARP’s parent organization, Family Federation USA, visited last year’s Momentum 2021 and shared goals for CARP to reach by 2027:
01. 1,200 CARP Chapters We’re dreaming big! Starting with 50 states, we hope to have 1,200 chapters within the decade.
02. 30,000 CARP Members With those 1,200 chapters, we are aiming for 30,000 CARP members in the United States.
In Momentum 2022, Dr. Yong visited again and came with one additional challenge which CARP leaders have been working to make happen:
01. 120 Student Leaders to Korea by Summer 2023 In preparation for this, National CARP decided to get the ball rolling by declaring to have a national workshop of 40 people in Las Vegas.

CARP Chapters Tap New Members at Campus Fairs

CARP chapters nationwide have kicked off the new school year by
participating in campus club fairs to connect and network with more
students. Establishing new membership and developing more
chapters are top goals of national CARP leaders.
“[Club fairs] have been a great opportunity to present CARP to many
new students and generate more exposure,” said one CARP
organizer in Northern California. CARP Chabot College in the Bay
Area reported there was stronger interest and a greater turnout of
students looking to learn more about the campus movement -
which creates programs, events, and activities that promote the
principles of faith, family values, and peace, as well as the growth
and support of young leaders. “Since this has been the first
semester where almost all classes were in person … there were
even more sign-ups than those from the pandemic combined,” said
the local CARP organizer.
Other chapters like CARP Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and New Jersey
presented their club materials at multiple fairs across campuses in
their area. CARP Chicago had several new members help distribute
information about the chapter to other students on campus, while
CARP Westminster in Utah shared a table at their campus fair with
an interfaith club.
“[This is] a great way to get the semester going,” said a CARP
Chicago member. “At each meeting, we get together and take part in
icebreakers and make connections to prepare ourselves to hear
topics based on the Divine Principle . We had amazing students
come in and share their thoughts. There are also many elders who
support [us], as well as our local community … Meetings have been
filled with lively discussions and laughter.”
In Boston, the CARP chapter successfully held its first “H igher
Purpose Talk” at the Boston Family Church in late September.
Sixteen people attended the program, including five new
participants. “The event began with fellowship, tasty pizza, and
mochi ice cream,” said Samuel, a local CARP member. “Participants
also played a fun but challenging game of fishbowl charades to get
to know one another.”
The chapter’s president delivered the main talk, which addressed
ways to transform our lives into ones with a higher purpose through
taking personal responsibility. “The program wrapped up with
participants sharing their thoughts about the message and how it
related to their own life,” said Samuel. “Overall, the event was a
success, and the core staff is very proud of holding this first event
open to the general public.” CARP Boston seeks to launch its first
Divine Principle seminar, as well as a second Higher Purpose Talk in
the coming weeks.
Nationally, CARP USA President Jinil Fleischman recently
announced a “New Hope Workshop,” scheduled for January 2023 in
Las Vegas, where chapter leaders will further develop ways to help
new members who have read the Divine Principle gain deeper
conviction in True Parents, the co-founders of CARP.

CARP Momentum 2022: Chapters Double in One Year

“CARP Momentum is all about building up momentum as we go into
each new school year, and I think that is what we’re experiencing,”
said Jinil Fleischman, CARP USA President. “At our [leaders]
workshop, you could really see and feel the spirit of our bright
young people discussing CARP’s vision. There was a great sense of
connection … with a really clear sense of unity where we are all
united on True Parents’ vision as CARP America.”
From July 25 to 27, CARP USA held its annual workshop for all
CARP leaders at the Unification Theological Seminary (UTS) in
Barrytown, New York. Some 90 college students partic ipated in the
program representing 24 states. “It was an amazing group,” said
Fleischman during a recent FFWPU USA leaders’ meeting. “This was
our largest CARP gathering since about 2016 … These students are
all witnessing on their campuses and leading their chapters, doing
the work of our movement and True Parents on their campuses.”
From 2021 to 2022, CARP’s national presence doubled, said
Fleischman - jumping from 11 to 22 states with CARP activity.
Growth continued, he said, with an increase from 12 to 23
established chapters, and expanding from 31 to 47 campuses. “This
doesn’t include five new potential chapters,” added Fleischman. “We
have activity that’s now taking place on many more campuses and
we have really grown in the past year.”
CARP leaders have been diligently working toward the group’s
national goals, as they aim to have 30,000 members and 1,200
chapters nationwide by 2027. “We’re not quite there yet,” said
Flesichman, “but even in just one year we have grown in pretty
significant ways.”
Dr. Chung Sik Vong, Regional President, FFWPU North America, and
all FFWPU USA regional leaders were on hand at the workshop to
share guidance and messages of inspiration with the group. “Dr.
Yong gave a really passionate speech to our leaders and called on
them to really be the ones to respond to True Mother and make
sacrifices,” said Flesichman. “He and his family have made a lot of
sacrifices for True Parents, and so that was the spirit of his
message to our CARP members - to be willing to make that kind of
offering for God’s Will.”
CARP leaders also heard more about the mission of Cheon Shim
Won from CheonBo staff, as well as a Q&A session and moving
student testimonies. “One young lady is one of two Unificationists
going to school at Princeton, and she shared about pioneering
CARP there,” said Fleischman. “Despite backlash from Christians on
campus, she was able to successfully establish a chapter.”
‘’I’m really inspired to see the growth and engagement of all our
student leaders,” said FFWPU USA President Rev. Naokimi Ushiroda.
“It’s very hopeful for our future.”
For Fleischman and CARP’s leaders, the new school year is already
off to a powerful start. “I think this workshop was a really reviving
experience for all of our students,” he said. “I think it’s giving them
new life, and it’s really preparing all of us to go forward .”
