PRINCIPLED CURRICULUM In 2020, National CARP (NCARP) expanded the Principled Curriculum series with three new presentations. Under the guidance of CARP educators, student interns helped craft these presentations.
The purpose of these presentations is to help fulfill CARP’s mission to help students study and apply Principle in a meaningful and relevant way. These presentations can help students articulate CARP’s principles to their friends and campus community. It can also help show how the Principle applies to all areas of life to provide personal, familial, relational, and societal benefits.
This content is based on the work and content of the International Education Foundation.

ONLINE MOMENTUM 2020 was presented many challenges and obstacles for both local chapters and the national organization, largely due to the pandemic. Instead of an in person leadership retreat, National CARP hosted the annual CARP student leader’s retreat, Momentum, online in January 2021.
Focused around goal setting and hearing from the national team and each other, this was a good opportunity for the CARP leaders to connect with the National Team and prep for the upcoming semester. Over 60 leaders joined this Momentum.

HYOJEONG CONFERENCE Following up on the relationships established from the Hyojeong Trips of 2016-2018, CARP USA teamed up again with CARP Korea and CARP Japan to address the issue of the peaceful reunification of North and South Korea, inviting politicians, academicians, pastors, and students from all three nations to speak on the issue.
Hosted both on Zoom and streamed live to Facebook, the HyoJeong Conference series had a collective total of over 10,000 views for all five conferences hosted over the course of 2020 into 2021.

UNIFICATION THOUGHT COURSE In a collaboration with the Research Institute for the Integration for World Thought, CARP offered a 10 week Unification Thought course for student leaders.
Unification Thought (sometimes referred to as Unification Philosophy) is a systematized presentation of the thought of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon. This course sought to familiarize participants with the unique insights of Unification Thought and the ways in which it relates to mainstream western thought.
Research fellows, Miyoung Eaton and Gerry Servito, joined the program, so students had access to researchers of the material who could share their insight and experience. Thirty seven students participated in the program.

LOCAL CHAPTER SUPPORT National CARP Calls NCARP hosted biweekly National CARP Calls for student leaders to connect, share about their activities, hear any national updates, and get support for their chapter.
Chapter Visits While visits were limited due to the pandemic, staff member Chungbom Katayama visited the Indiana chapter in March 2021, met with the leaders and members, and helped them make
Swag plans for the future.
In Fall 2020, all chapters received masks with the slogan “Live for the Sake of Others.” Design made by CARP Administrator Takayoshi Sugawara.

2 While local programming is largely initiated and carried through by local chapters, the National team supports all local programs through resources, connecting them to presenters or other organizations, financing, graphic design, etc.
WORKSHOPS Local chapters most commonly host either one day, two day, or seven day workshops/retreats for both their leaders and members. One day or two day retreats usually take place once a month or once every other month, while longer workshops will take place at the end of each semester.
In Spring 2021, both CARP Las Vegas and CARP DMV held longer mulitple week retreats to include an experiential application of CARP’s core values.
“My highlight of the retreat were all the people and how [I] felt God through them and felt so much love… What I’d like to take from this retreat is all the knowledge and love and bring it home and to my family and community and maintain the friendships and relationships I formed there.” - Maria Barragan, Chabot College, Sophomore, Astrophysics, CARP Bay Area
These retreats are an opportunity for each chapter to go more in depth into CARP’s values and principles as well as build deeper bonds with each participant.
In 2020-2021, even in a pandemic, over 20 chapters hosted or co-hosted workshops either online or in person as things opened up in their state.

MEETINGS Throughout the school year, chapters host their own weekly meetings to introduce CARP’s principles and make regular connections with their members. These meetings are held either on a weekly or biweekly basis.
During the pandemic, all meetings were moved online, and many chapters had an opportunity to join other chapters’ meetings. Surprisingly, most chapters retained if not increased their membership during the pandemic and were able to keep a consistent meeting schedule.

SERVICE PROJECTS Notable service projects this year were done by the CARP Bay Area hub and CARP New Jersey hub.
For 40 days from Martin Luther King, Jr Day in 2021, CARP Bay Area partnered with other local organizations to design and paint an enormous mural outside Sobrante Park in Oakland, California. This project was accompanied by regular trash cleanups involving their community. They also spent a day in May to distribute food in Chinatown.
Also on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, CARP New Jersey distributed peace messages and cleaned the streets of Newark.

IMPACT EVENTS Outside of meetings, workshops, and service projects, larger chapters will host larger events centered around a single theme or principle.
Last September, CARP Bay Area hosted an online Peace Starts With Me event with the theme “Empowering Individuals.” They invited guest speakers to talk about how to develop habits and attitudes that contribute to peacemaking.
On April 10, CARP Las Vegas, with the help of CARP Bay Area and CARP DMV, partnered with several organizations to host the 6th Campus Talk, a conference discussing the value of marriage and preparing for marriage during college. This time, the conference centered around three truths: How you live now matters, marriage is the doorway to greater love, and your marriage will affect the world.

MOMENTUM 2021 From August 10 to 12, National CARP hosted its annual Momentum leadership retreat. Due to COVID-19, Momentum was canceled in 2020 making this the first time CARP student leaders were able to gather in two years (following CDC guidelines). The purpose of this retreat was to connect the local chapters and National CARP to a higher vision for the 2021-2022 school year.
Chapters from New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois, Minneapolis, Texas, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Washington, Hawaii, and California gathered for this national summit. In total, 71 people, including participants and staff, attended.
“Going into this workshop, my intentions were to inherit from other chapters to implement at CARP DMV, to solidify within myself that CARP is what God wants me to do, and to see the value and significance of CARP…This workshop helped me let go of the doubts that I had and determine to invest more this year.
Right now, the group of people who have a strong spirit and passion are the youth, and CARP’s responsibility is to help channel their spirit and passion.” - Mitsuyoshi Orikasa, Montgomery College, Sophomore, Exercise Science, CARP DMV
