CARP USA Newsletter for June 2020: One Family Under God

One Family Under God “One Family Under God.” It’s a beautiful statement and very catchy. This phrase sums up what Father and Mother Moon, founders of CARP, have stood for their entire lives. Having grown up with their teachings, I have heard this slogan over and over my whole life. Sometimes I forget how profound and revolutionary this simple idea truly is.

In the past few weeks, we have seen the human family in turmoil over the tragic and evil murder of George Floyd. We’ve seen a dramatic response from all peoples, denouncing all forms of racism and championing the cause of justice and peace, particularly for the Black community. Though protests have at times been stained by acts of violence and looting, the majority have been peaceful and demonstrate the greatness of the human spirit.

We all long to embrace each other as brothers and sisters, as One Family. When we see oppression and injustice, the natural response is to be outraged and demand change. The activism surrounding George Floyd’s death has helped many Americans of all colors and people around the world—myself included— to be more aware of the injustices committed against the Black community. Now is the time to take a big step closer towards treating each other like One Family.

I believe that the second half of that slogan is even more profound: “Under God.” Father and Mother Moon have taught that God is the Parent of all humankind and loves every person as the most precious child of heaven. How does God feel to see the state of the human family today? God’s heart must be breaking for George Floyd, the Black community, and all victims of injustice! Not only that, but God’s heart must also be breaking for Derek Chauvin and all other perpetrators of evil. When I reflect on the sorrow of God, my heart is moved to tears, and I feel the urgency to strive for peace.

Peace cannot be won by violence, by the kind of change that is fueled by resentment. Peace can only be achieved by the power of love, like the unconditional love of a mother for her child. I have been so inspired by the example of love demonstrated by Mother Moon, as seen in her memoirs, titled Mother of Peace. She has lived her life with the determination to forgive the unforgivable, to love the unlovable, and to share the healing love of a mother to the world. I call upon you, and I, and all of us to do the same.

I am always so proud of our CARP students across the country for championing the principles taught by Father and Mother Moon, and for striving to be the living example of those principles. Our CARP chapters are shining examples of people who feel that we are “One Family Under God.” For all of the students reading this message, please know that we love you, we are proud of you, and we pray for your strength to continue the important work you are doing on campus!
