The Panzer-Feffarman Debate

-welcome to Panzer-Fefferman Debate! “*” (Overview) Timing: The debate will take place on Saturday, January 30, starting at 1 p.m., EST. The debaters (Richard Panzer, Dan Fefferman) and moderator (Stephen Henkin) will use this column. There is no exact end lime; it depends on the ebb and flow of the discussion. VlsHors wlll be able to post on this page only after the debate concludes. Visitors may also use that column to comment on posts by other visitors. The Topics: Both Dan Fefferman and Richard Panzer 1N9re each given the identical 13 possible topics to prepare for the debate. They were also told that seven of the topics provided would actually be used in the debate. Neither of 1he debaters will know what the final seven topics are until the time of the debate. Debate Format: Both of the debaters will give an opening statement on each topic, Including an explanation of what their position Is on 1he topic and why; follo1N9d by the debaters having an exchange with each other, such as refuting what 1he other has said while strengthening their own position; at the end of which they wlll both give a closing statement, a last chance to refute what their opponent has said while summarizing why they think their argument is correct. Who gives the opening statement first In the debate wlll be decided by a coin toss. Whoever gives the opening statement also begins 1he exchange phase along with giving their closing statement first. But 1hls wlll rotate completely between the debaters with each topic. Ground Rules: The two debaters wlll be respectful of one another and no obscenities, threats, or ad hominem attacks will be permitted. The moderator (Stephen Henkin) reserves the right to censure a debater if they conduct themselves Inappropriately following a warning. The moderator also reserves the right to move a topic along or end one if things get bogged down or if arguments get redundant. A reasonable amount of time wlll be given to cover each topic; there will be no strict time limit for each portion of each topic, but for planning purposes both debaters have been infonned that they will have at least 10 minutes for their opening statements; 20 minutes for the exchange portion of the debate; and 10 more minutes for each debater to present their closing debate. This means that each debater should have at least 30 minutes to present their position on each of the seven topics. The debate audience will be free to leave their comments and respond to others on the web site Immediately following the debate.
