-Supplemental Materials for the Three Hour Lecture Manual-

Family Federation for World Peace and Unification

This book, containing a wealth of material to be used for the three hour Divine Principle lecture has been produced due to the efforts and dedication of Gil Ja Sa Eu, the chairwoman of the House of Unification for World Peace, along with Geun-sik Song and other lecturers. While it is said that “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free,” the first step in the course of restoring humankind, who have descended into ignorance due to the fall, to their original place, is to overcome that ignorance by meeting the real truth. The first step is correctly understanding the process of the creation, fall and restoration of humankind and the created world. As a teaching that brings a clear understanding of the existence of God, the Creator of the world and the Heavenly Father of humankind, and of the position of humankind as God’s children, it is like a flame that brings a ray of brilliant light into the darkest night. The Divine Principle can instantly bring understanding and the ultimate an- swers to the questions of where humankind came from, how should people live and where they are headed, in contrast to the course of many ascetics who spend years pursuing a hum- ble life, deep in mediation, in a quest for self-discovery and an understanding of the truth. At the same time, the final destination of the truth is meeting the substantial truth. This is why Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” By studying the Principle and Fa- ther’s words, you can come to the correct understanding of True Parents, as well as attaining the ultimate goal of becoming an embodiment of the practical application of the Principle. Therefore, the lost place where the Parents of Heaven and children on the earth can meet each other is where the providence described in Father’s words is being carried out. If the Divine Principle is the bones, with Father’s words as the flesh, your understand of the Princi- ple can become abundantly clearer and deeper. I am grateful to those who have participated in the publication of this book, which adds material from Father’s words and excerpts from the Principle to the shortest version of the Principle that can bring a full understanding, the three hour lecture. I believe it will be of great help in enabling all of our members to become Divine Principle lecturers who can bring the light of life and offer a clear path to the many new members who are still wander- ing in a maze. Thank you.

Dr. Changshik Yong Special Emissary

I’d like to offer my congratulations and deep appreciation to Mrs. Gil Ja Sa Eu and the House of Unification for World Peace on the publication of their updated “Divine Principle Lecture Manual - A guide for all members in becoming DP Lecturers.” I believe there is nothing more important that helping all Unification family members to become confident in teaching and sharing the Divine Principle, the previous revelation from God received on the foundation of True Parents’ incredible effort and sacrifice. The very first words of the Divine Principle make with the dramatic assertion that every- one without exception is seeking happiness. Clearly, the way to do that is to overcome pres- ent unhappiness—and the way to overcome unhappiness is to dispel ignorance. The Divine Principle is nothing less than God’s new revelation with the divine power to chase away the shadows of ignorance. The new truth of God must also solve many problems, including bringing about the unity of all religions, especially Christianity; the unity of religion and science; offering a count- er-proposal to all materialistic and selfish ideologies, especially communism; elucidate all the difficult issues and controversies of the Bible; introduce a new understanding of the rela- tionship of God and man; explain the origin of good and evil, and most importantly help all human beings follow the desires of our good original mind whilst resisting the temptations of the evil, fallen mind. Of course, despite these lofty claims expectations, the Divine Principle can only accom- plish these goals when it is successfully taught, understood and practiced. In each genera- tion, we need renewed inspiration and leadership to make the study of the Principle our first priority. The first pioneer of the teaching of the Divine Principle after True Father was the late Hyo Won Eu, the first president of the Korean Unification Church. Despite great personal suffer- ing due to ill health, he devoted himself to spreading the good news of the Divine Principle to Korea and the world. Yet he never felt he could do enough. Today, his widow Mrs. Gil Ja Sa Eu, our dear elder sister, is faithfully carrying on that same to make the Divine Principle available to all the world. She knows that for this to hap- pen, the teaching of the Principle cannot be just the task of leaders, pastors, and professional lecturers. It has to be something that every church member can do confidently and well. In

the idiom of today, the Divine Principle has to go viral. This series of simple lectures and lecturer’s notes, designed to be taught by PowerPoint, or in a workbook, make it possible for anyone to give a coherent Divine Principle presentation simply by following the manual. Just as important by following the guidelines in this way the student is himself or herself resurrected and uplifted by the power of God’s Word. What makes the newly revised series even more special is that Mrs. Eu has added a good selection of True Parents’ words and sermons in support of the basic Principle content, as well as adding a generous sprinkling of her own, first hand learning experiences with True Father in the early days of our movement. These stories make the text even more fresh in an authentic gospel tradition. Recently True Mother has been emphasizing the importance of our church recapturing the spirit of the early days, where the Divine Principle was taught each and every day, long into the night, and where new people would come and listen and would not want to leave. We want to bring back that kind of experience and make it available to our family, friends and neighbors. In this way we can fulfill the most important task of all tribal messiahs: to convey the love and truth of True Parents to a world in need. I recommend this small book to everyone, and pray that it will fan a flame of revival that will burn brightly for many years to come.

Dr. Michael Balcomb, President, FFWPU USA

As we enter the age of home church in the first year of Cheon Il Guk, for anybody to ac- complish the mission of tribal messiah they must be able to teach the Divine Principle. In accordance with True Parents’ direction to give lectures by reading from the Divine Principle, the Diagrammed Lecture Manual for Three Hour Lectures has been developed, which enables everyone to give reading-based lectures. However, because this manual con- denses the vast content of the Divine Principle into a three-hour format, it often requires more detailed explanations and examples. Hence, we are presenting an expanded edition of this manual. True Father has told us that when we give lectures, we should illustrate them with contents of his speeches or the Divine Principle, rather than with our own ideas or worldly knowl- edge. Therefore, this book takes supplementary examples and explanations from Father’s words and the Divine Principle. I am confident that everyone (including second and third generations) who makes proper use of this book will come to a deep understanding of the Divine Principle and gain the abil- ity to give confident Divine Principle lectures. I hope that our members will make good use of it to receive God’s grace and bring great results.

● Everyone is struggling to attain happiness and avoid misfortune.

● How, then, does happiness arise?

● People feel joy when their desires are fulfilled.

Introduction 3

● The word “desire,” however, is often not understood in its original sense because in the present circumstances our desires tend to pursue evil rather than good.

● The original mind is well aware that the desires pursuing evil lead to misfortune.

● Therefore, it repels evil desires and strives to follow goodness. Even at the cost of their lives, people seek for the joy that can enrapture the original mind.

Yet since the beginning of time, not even one person has abided strictly by his original mind. As St. Paul lamented, “For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Rom 7:22-24) (Exposition p. 1~2)

4 A guide for all members in becoming Divine Principle Lecturers

● Within the self-same individual are two opposing inclinations: the origi- nal mind that desires goodness and the evil mind that desires wicked- ness.

The original mind is one that lives for the sake of the whole; in other words, it is a mind that causes one to desire to live for others. The evil mind, on the other hand, is one that causes one to live for oneself. The original mind is moved through true love, while the evil mind is moved through false love

● They are engaged in a fierce battle, striving to accomplish two conflict- ing purposes. Any being possessing such a contradiction within itself is doomed to perish.

● Human beings, having acquired this contradiction, live on the brink of destruction.

Can it be that human life originated with such a contradiction? How could beings with a self-contradictory nature come into existence? If burdened by such a contradiction from its inception, human life would not have been able to arise. The contradiction, therefore, must have developed after the birth of the human race (Exposition p. 2).

● Christianity sees this state of destruction as the result of the human Fall.

Introduction 5

● Considered from the viewpoint of the intellect, the Human Fall rep- resents humanity’s descent into ignorance.

● People are composed of two aspects: internal and external, or mind and body;

● In the same way, there are two types of ignorance: internal ignorance and external ignorance.

Internal ignorance, in religious terms, is spiritual ignorance. It is ignorance of such questions as: What is the origin of human beings? What is the pur- pose of life? What happens after death? Do God and the next world exist? What is the nature of good and evil? In other words, it is ignorance concern- ing the view of God, human beings, the universe, and history.

External ignorance refers to ignorance of the natural world, including the human body. It is ignorance of such issues as: What is the origin of the physical universe? What are the natural laws governing all phenomena? In other words, it refers to ignorance of the human body, material, and natural laws (Exposition p. 3).

6 A guide for all members in becoming Divine Principle Lecturers

From the dawn of history until today, human beings have ceaselessly searched for the truth with which to overcome both types of ignorance and attain knowledge (Exposition p. 3).

● Humanity through religion has followed the path of searching for inter- nal truth,

● And through science has followed the path of seeking external truth.

● Religion and science, each in their own spheres, have been the meth- ods of searching for truth in order to conquer ignorance and attain knowledge.

Introduction 7

● Religion and science, setting out with the missions of dispelling the two aspects of human ignorance, have seemed in the course of their devel- opment to take positions that were contradictory and irreconcilable.

● However, for humankind to completely overcome the two aspects of ig- norance and fully realize the goodness which the original mind desires, at some point in history there must emerge a new truth which can rec- oncile religion and science and resolve their problems in an integrated undertaking.

Until now, there has been no religion that could lead people of this age to a proper way of life; in the same way, science has been unable to fundamen- tally resolve the spiritual demands of humanity. Hence for these reasons, a new truth must appear (Exposition p. 3, p. 7).

8 A guide for all members in becoming Divine Principle Lecturers

Christians believe that the scriptures they have are already perfect and flaw- less.

● Certainly, truth itself is unique, eternal, immutable and absolute. Scrip- tures, however, are not the truth itself, but are textbooks teaching the truth. They were given at various times in history as humankind devel- oped both spiritually and intellectually. The depth and extent of teaching and the method of expressing the truth naturally varied according to each age (Exposition p. 7).

Thus, in John 16:25, Jesus promises to reveal to us the new truth. “I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father.” (Exposition p. 105)

In John 3:12, Jesus said, “If I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe, how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?” Just as this verse indicates, Jesus died on the cross without being able to say everything he wanted to say.

In John 16:12, Jesus added, “I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now (Exposition p. 105).”

Introduction 9

● The new truth should be able to reveal the reality of God and His heart: His joyous heart of creation as well as His striving heart of salvation to save humankind throughout the long course of history.

In other words, the new truth must be able to reveal not only the existence of God, but also the fundamental will of God who has been working to bring salvation to humanity, answering questions concerning our relationship with God, the reason for the unfolding of today’s sinful world, and God’s heart and will in relation to the sinful world.

● This truth must be able to embrace all historical religions, ideologies and philosophies and bring complete unity among them.

● Unity starts with the unity of mind and body and the unity of husband and wife (The words of Rev. Sunmyung Moon).

● New truth should guide fallen people to return to their original state.

The new truth must be able to elucidate the problems relating to the Fall, the origin of human history, and the difficult issues in Christianity. Jesus said himself that he would reveal and explain the many difficult problems arising from the parables and symbols within the Bible not in figures, but in plain words for everyone to understand (Exposition p. 10-12).

10 A guide for all members in becoming Divine Principle Lecturers

● This ultimate life-giving truth, however, cannot be discovered through an exhaustive investigation of scriptures or scholarly texts; nor can it be in- vented by any human intellect.

● As is written in the Book of Revelation, “You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and tongues and kings, (Rev. 10:11)” truth must appear as a revelation from God.

● God has sent one person to this earth to resolve the fundamental prob- lems of human life and the universe. His name is Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

Rev. Moon fought alone against millions of devils, both in the spiritual and physical worlds, and triumphed over them all. Through intimate spiritual communion with God and by meeting with Jesus and many saints in Para- dise, he brought to light all the secrets of Heaven. In every corner of the world, countless souls who had been groping in the darkness are receiving the light of this new truth and are being reborn. We desire from the bottom of our hearts that its light quickly fills the earth (Exposition p.12).
