A significant escalation in state-driven legal actions against minority religious organizations is unfolding in Japan and South Korea. While these measures have raised concern among international human-rights advocates and legal scholars, they have been publicly supported by China’s state-affiliated Anti-Xie-Jiao Association in Beijing.

In March 2025, Japan’s Tokyo District Court ordered the dissolution of the Family Federation of Japan, revoking its religious-corporate status following investigations linked to the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In December 2025, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced a series of investigations into religious organizations’ alleged improper political ties, openly raising the possibility of further legal sanctions or dissolution.

These developments followed “anti-cult” conferences held at a Japanese university in December 2024 and at Mokwon University in Daejeon in mid-2025. Participants included Chinese scholars associated with the China Anti-Xie-Jiao Association, along with pro-PRC Japanese and South Korean academics critical of minority religious movements.

In the political sphere, comparable influence efforts were reported during Taiwan’s 2024 national elections, where the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front Work Department (UFWD) allegedly pursued multi-layered outreach and influence activities aimed at shaping the political environment.

The United Front Works Department (UFWD) functions as a key CCP organ 1focused on overseas influence, elite engagement, and political persuasion. Our featured speaker, Lei, host of “Lei’s Real Talk,” will examine how these strategies are evolving across East Asia—and their potential implications beyond the region.

We invite you to join us for this timely and substantive Zoom discussion.

Sincerely, James B. Edgerly Director, Higher Purpose Forum
