On January 24th, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officially announced investigations into General Zhang Youxia (Vice-chair of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC) and member of the CCP Politburo) and General Liu Zhenli (senior member of the CMC) for “serious violations of discipline and law”. The announcement followed the violent arrest of these two highest ranking military officials four days earlier, a move undertaken without the required prior approval by the Politburo Standing Committee.

This amounts to an illegal a purge of China’s most senior and respected military leadership and completes the evisceration of the CMC. Thus far, there is no indication as to whether or not the two generals are still alive.

With this unprecedented turmoil inside China’s ruling elite and intensifying tensions between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the PLA - critical questions are emerging about Beijing’s internal stability and strategic direction.
