A dramatic escalation in state-driven legal actions against minority religious

organizations is unfolding in Japan and South Korea. While these maneuvers have alarmed international human-rights monitors and legal scholars, they have received praise from the state-affiliated China Anti-Xie-Jiao Association in Beijing.

In Japan, the Tokyo District Court recently ordered the dissolution of the Family Federation of Japan, revoking its juridical status following the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Simultaneously, South Korean President Lee Jae- myung has called for investigations into religious groups’ “illegal or improper” links to politics, publicly raising the possibility of organizational dissolution. A recent “anti-cult” summit at a Japanese university, featuring PRC-aligned scholars and South Korean opponents of minority faiths, has heightened concerns about cross-border coordination and state-aligned advocacy.

Similar patterns surfaced during Taiwan’s 2024 national elections. While the DPP retained the presidency, the CCP’s United Front Works Department (UFWD) executed a multi-layered influence campaign—including subsidized “exchange” trips for local officials and distributed disinformation networks—to secure a more favorable legislative outcome for Beijing.

The UFWD is a primary arm of the CCP, tasked with co-opting elites, marginalizing perceived opponents, and infiltrating foreign institutions. Our speaker, Lei, host of “Lei’s Real Talk,” is a leading expert on the CCP. Lei will analyze how, through the UFWD, the CCP’s infiltration strategies are advancing across Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and increasingly, the United States.
