Presentation & Discussion Series CORRECTED TIME Tomorrow, February 13 @ 7:00 PM EST via ZOOM (Registration Required) Co-Hosted with HJ International Graduate School (formerly UTS)

Presenter - Dr. Thomas Walsh President, HJ International Graduate School “The Quest for Justice” Introduction - James B. Edgerly Director, Higher Purpose Forum “A Simple Context for New Ideas in Justice & Economic Democracy”

Dear We welcome you to joint our meeting tomorrow Tuesday (Feb 13), co-hosted with the HJ International Graduate School of Peace and Public Leadership (HJI). Our speaker will be Dr.

Thomas Walsh, President of HJI.

This session is being presented in the context of the Higher Purpose Forum series on “Economic Democracy”, led by Alan Jessen. Alan led two session on Economic Democracy during 2023. This topic will be featured at the HJI Conference on Peace & Public Leadership on April 11 to 13.

“Justice” is often used as a term with gravitas. However, its meaning is not always well understood or agreed upon. Philosophers from Aristotle to John Rawls have sought to clarify the meaning of justice as a basis for building a good or just society. Still, concepts such as “economic justice” or “social justice” remain highly complex and, therefore, topics of robust disagreement. Often communities form around particular theories of justice, standing in contrast with other communities. In some respects, the Cold Wars, I and II, have roots in contrasting theories of justice; likewise, our polarized political parties.

In this program, we will discuss the concept of justice, seeking at least to arrive at some advanced clarity about the complexity of the concept and its application to economic, political, and social contexts.

Presenter Thomas Walsh, PhD President of HJI Graduate School of Peace & Justice Studies; Professor of Religion and Peace A 1979 graduate of HJI, Dr. Walsh earned his Ph.D. in 1986 at Vanderbilt University’s School of Religion where he specialized in the study of Religion and Ethics. Dr. Walsh has taught courses in religion, philosophy and ethics at a number of colleges and universities, including at HJI.

Dr. Walsh has worked closely with HJI Co-Founders, Rev Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, in the establishment and in the leadership of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF). Most recently he served as the International Chair of UPF, which holds General Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and which has active chapters in more than 120 countries.
