The Transformative Power of the Arts as a Healing Agent

The belief that art and beauty have transformative and healing properties is one that dates back to the cultures of antiquity. Philosophers, politicians, educators and artists of the past intuited that art wasn’t solely about pleasure or aesthetics. The philosophers of ancient China and Greece believed that art possessed moral and ethical implications and could be a gateway to higher truths and deeper understandings of the human condition. Hebrew and Christian philosophers also shared this perspective and wrote copious treatises regarding the effects of art on self and society. Any examination of our cultural inheritance reveals that the metaphysical, spiritual and axiological aspects of art and its potential as a change agent, has been a constant refrain from antiquity to the present.

Friedrich Schiller, who studied theology as a young man asserted: “Only through Beauty’s morning-gate, dost thou penetrate the land of knowledge.”

In our discussion today we will examine that premise and the potential of art to be a factor in the creation of a culture of peace — an idea that lies at the heart of the IAACP.
