Presenter - Thomas Cromwell “Edward Haskell & Unified Science: Evidence of Moral Force in Nature”

We are pleased to be restarting our Higher Purpose Forum (HPF) Saturday meeting series, following an extended break during the month of August. (If someone forwarded this email to you, please sign up here to get added to our mailing list.)

On Saturday, September 16, we will be hosting a talk by Thomas Cromwell. He will review the remarkable ideas of Edward Haskell, a man whose story some of us can still vaguely remember. Haskell headed a group of academics who developed what he called “Unified Science”, the initial basis for the ICUS Conferences.

Thomas was the person who initially met Haskell. While serving as a missionary in New Haven CT, Thomas attended his first Haskell lecture. He was immediately struck by the compatibility between concepts in the Divine Principle and the theories of Unified Science. A personal relationship developed which eventually led to a meeting

between Haskell and Reverend Moon in 1972. Reverend Moon offered to support what became the first International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS), in November that year. Its theme was: “Moral Orientation of the Sciences,” and it largely featured presentations of various elements of Unified Science.

Summary Thomas will provide a brief overview of two core Unified Science concepts:

1) The Periodic Coordinate System. The first is a generalization of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, recognizing nine main groups of elements that exhibit distinct characteristics. These nine “coactions” can be found in all the kingdoms of creation, from particles through atoms and molecules, plants and animals, and finally with human beings and their characteristics and social behaviors.

These patterns reveal that, in the natural world, cooperation is ‘rewarded’ and conflict ‘punished’, essentially a scientific demonstration of the Golden Rule. In these patterns we find clear parallels with basic elements of DP, such as subject-object relationships, give and take action, and the Cain-Abel paradigm. (See Thomas’ book: The Triumph of Good.)

2) Hierarchical Order of Systems in Nature, demonstrated both in evolution and in the dynamics of life and existence in general.

Together these theories of Unified Science elaborate a natural process of creation, evolution, and development. They can be observed in both the natural world and in the unfolding of human history, helping us to understand how a beginning at Alpha is intended to culminate at Omega, when the original image of God is reflected or realized in an ideal world.
