President Anote Tong (62) of Kiribati and Dr. Modadugu V. Gupta (75) of India were selected as the co- recipients for the first Sunhak Peace Prize.
The Sunhak Peace Prize was established by the founder of the Family Federation, Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han in order to discover and recognize individuals and organizations who have contributed towards the peace and welfare of the future generations, thereby promoting a new peace civilization.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee has revealed that President Anote’s efforts to raise awareness concerning the gravity of climate change in the global community and protect the rights of refugees affected by the climate, have been highly praised.
The contender for the Nobel Peace Prize has been constantly raising awareness about climate change in various international organizations including the United Nations, and is playing a crucial role in the composition of a comprehensive consultative group in order to come up with active global solutions.
President Anote established the Pheonix Islands of Protected Area (PIPA) despite the hopeless situation of his country’s imminent risk of being submerged within the next thirty years, created a Pacific Ocean landscape management consultative group, and is heading up other projects on ocean protection and management on a worldwide scale.
Dr. Gupta has been widely recognized for his contributions toward resolving East Asia’s poverty and food crisis through innovative fish farming technology. So much so that he has been called “the pioneer of the Blue Revolution” and “East Asia’s saint for poor people”
Dr. Gupta has created a fish farming business revolution by causing an explosive increase in the number of fish thanks to improved cultivation conditions for various fish species such as “tilapia” and “silver Babu,” which have the potential to grow more quickly than wild fish species.
In order to develop a fish farm technology suitable to the region, Dr. Gupta even risked his life and went to East Asia’s conflict areas to carry out research in an innovative manner. He gave the low-cost and highly efficient technology of “Integrated Agriculture-Aquaculture”(IAA) to the poor people.
The Chairman of the Sunhak Peace Prize committee Il-Shik Hong said, “The Sunhak Peace Prize is a peace prize for the sake of the future generations. Even now, President Tong and Dr. Gupta, who have made efforts to resolve climate change and the food crisis, are working hard in order to protect the future peace of humankind.”
