Eulogy
Biographical sketch drawn from the recorded Seonghwa Ceremony hosted by SR2 Southeast in Richmond, Virginia.
Carlton Leon Johnson was born and raised in Church Hill, Richmond, Virginia, the son of Robert Johnson. He attended Episcopal High School alongside lifelong friend David Reed before going on to Harvard, where he studied anthropology with a focus on religious studies. Three of his brothers also attended Harvard; Carlton, however, took a different path, dedicating himself to the Unification movement as a young man in his early twenties.
His life of faith carried him across continents. After early years of mission and fundraising work in the United States, he spent roughly fifteen years in Japan, where he married Mioko and their family began, and another long chapter in Korea. There he taught and mentored at the Minjok Leadership Academy and Sun Jin Academy, advising thousands of students through their secondary years and into university. Speakers described him as a teacher, mentor, and life coach to a generation of young Korean leaders.
Carlton was remembered above all for his spiritual sensitivity. The MC described his 'incredible gift to be able to hear God's words' and his complete obedience to what he heard, including a prompting fifteen years before his death to go to Japan that led to medical treatment that saved his life. He was an early American devotee of the Cheon Won Gung prayer garden in Korea.
He was also a musician, performing and writing songs heard in the tribute video, and an avid reader and conversationalist who would stop by friends' homes at any hour to talk about God. With Mioko, he offered their second son, Stephen, as an 'offering child' to Esteban and Lorna Galvan of the Bronx, an act remembered as a profound gift of love.
His sons Tad, Jason, and Ty spoke candidly of a demanding father whose long absences for ministry were difficult, but whose love and discipline shaped them and whose devotion to God they came to understand. Friends and family agreed his abiding passion was bringing people, families, and ancestries together as one.
'What is God saying to you?' was the greeting friends remembered him by. As one pastor said, reading 1 Corinthians 13 at his service: 'Love is patient, love is kind... that's my brother Carlton Johnson right there.'
